Looking Back

The EC was the first leg of Team B&Bs Ultimate Florida Challenge adventure.   Traveling in straight lines, a path down the EC course could be as short as about 280 miles  --if not going through the Wilderness Waterway which adds about 30 miles.  Most challengers travel more than 280.  For boats with sails, tacking adds mileage.

SandyBottom said their path this week measured 349.8 miles (which includes tacking).   Their max speed was 15.3 knots.   The average speed when moving (which includes times when heaved-to) was 6.1 knots.  She said "We were surprised that in head winds fully reefed we were often moving at 12 knots.  The wind and sea state had us with mainsail reefed throughout the EC except for today (CP3 to Key Largo) when we sailed with the mainsail fully deployed. We rarely used the jib except when needing it to maneuver better in headwinds. Alan very pleased with upwind performance which included being able to sail 45 degrees off the wind."

Looking Forward

With a little time in Key Largo,  SB and SOS have rested and finished the repairs, resupplying, and improvements needed. They reported this evening that they are aiming to cross Biscayne Bay tomorrow and then stop to sleep. Theyre aiming to wake up at 5am tomorrow morning and then be ready to sail away at about 7am.

Its been just about a month and a half since I cut the first wood for the boat. I spent the better part of 9 months designing in Rhino 3D and I am up to saved version 103. I have 12 ama iterations and about 6 of the main hull. All that and Im still making major changes to the boat. Such is boat building.

A few days ago I removed the temporary frame that held the sheer line in place while I was installing stations. Ive been anxious for that because it meant I could weight the hull. Drum roll.....62lbs as it sits. That is minus a couple of bulkheads, stringers, cabin sole, seats, cockpits, hatches and of course epoxy coating. Its heavier than I had hoped but not a death sentence. She is still on track to be significantly lighter than any production multihull of this size and power.

Below are the visible epoxy marks of a bulkhead that didnt make the cut. Its not that I put it in the wrong place, its just that I moved it after it had already been installed. Oops.

Im closing in on the last few bulkheads. Once they are all in, I will be able to install the stringers for good, epoxy coat the inside and start closing it up. There isnt really that much in this hull.

One down side so far has been the artform that is tortured ply in a 1 off scenario, there was no way I could predict the exact section shapes and no one has built this hull before. Sometimes you have to let the wood do what it wants to do. All of the bulkheads in the main hull have been painstakingly patterned and hand fit. This just wont do for the amas. I need to speed up construction so Im working on a more precise way to predict the ply shape so that I can CNC cut the bulkheads and have two identical amas. This will hopefully speed up construction. Stay tuned. Amas are on the horizon.

Team B&B arrived in Key Largo at 8:00 pm Thursday March 8th.  

 

Winds for the crossing from CP3 to Key Largo have been  relentlessly out of the east which tends to empty Florida Bay.

At 9:30am today SB and SOS sailed away from CP3 toward a southbound route down to Long Key to pick up the ICW bearing 060 up toward Key Largo.  Not wanting to give back any eastward progress, they first tried the route down Murray Key canal. 

The water was too thin, due to all that strong east wind thats been emptying the bay,  and the head winds made it difficult to stay in the narrow channel.   On the verge of getting stuck in the mud, they abandoned that route by drifting backward into a deeper channel that took them westward.  Thus they were able to head west to pick up the other southbound route that begins at red marker "2" (about 3 miles south of East Cape).  They sailed at 6-10 kts SE and reached the Long Key / Fiesta Key area at about 2:00pm.

By 3:30pm the "Mosquito" was passing Lower Matecumbe Key on its way up the ICW.   At that point they had about 23nm to go and seemed to be moving at about 7.0 kts.

So, in the "a bit of warning" department because most folks dont really like surprises.

For a long time Ive been thinking about doing  a somewhat out-of-the-box documentary film on various aspects of boat design, boat construction, and how we actually use boats in the real world. Or in other words, to simply scratch my curiousity on a subject quite dear to my heart and, to steal a phrase from Ratty, continue "just messing around in boats".

Of course, there always a downside, which will mean a bit less time for Boat Bits, VolksCruiser, and Fishing Under Sail but, hopefully, there will be enough spinoff from the film project (outtakes, production diary, and shameless pimping) to keep readers reading and some of it might actually be interesting...

Since we seem to be coming up to the fairly round if somewhat magical number of 2222 posts you might find Boat Bits doing a bit of morphing come 2223 or so.

Boat Plans Bateau | CP2 in Chokoloskee FL

SandyBottom and SOS reached Chokoloskee (CP2) at about 1:00pm on Wednesday the 7th.   Sailing from Indian Key through narrow canals to CP2 was one of the most difficult efforts so far:  thin water, currents,  howling head winds, heat, etc.    Lots of hard work.  The high tide at CP2 is at about 2pm. 

On reaching Chokoloskee Bay, they paused at one point because they were not making any forward progress there --despite exhausting effort. The tide was rising (high tide at 2pm) so taking a break may have been helpful; more depth being helpful.

They did not stay long at CP2.  By 3:50pm SB and SOS were on their way out toward the Gulf.

West Marine sells it for $299.99 and Defender sells it for $235.99 so the one youre inquiring about is not really a good deal and, if youre going to spend your money foolishly, youre better off giving it to the folks at Defender.

Then again, if you want something that does the same job just as well for a non-stupid price like this one...

Some hardcore Dazzle, cleaning up trash in Patagonia, and its funny how when I read this I found myself thinking of current trends in yacht design, boat building, and the cruising community...

Yesterday I came across someone who was selling a mounting bracket for a self-steering gear and asking $1000 for it as it was "new" and if you were to buy it from the company who made it youd be out of pocket for nearly $1600.

I found the quoted retail price to be doubtful so trundled over to the companies site and lo and behold the part in question cost $1593... OUCH!

I then check my various materials catalogs and price lists to see what the actual cost of said bracket amounted to and came up with a number of around $150 for materials and labor so with a 100% markup lets say a fair price would be somewhere around $300. Of course, those figures are based with me going out and building one bracket and we really should factor in that a company building many gears would have the added advantage of bulk buying materials, labor saving tooling, and systematic production so the cost should really be a whole lot less...

Which tells me theyre either inept, greedy, or a combination of the two. Pretty normal for a marine business in the year 2015.

I hear a lot of excuses on why marine businesses have to price stuff at silly prices... small market, niche market, and so on but every time I look at silly expensive products I still find that theres a certain aroma akin to five-day old mackerel festering in the sun somewhere in the mix...

That said, the fault is really not with the builders and providers of said gear because faced with consumers who will blindly pay silly money for gear simply because its for a boat, even the most honorable person will be hard pressed not to take advantage and price their products accordingly.

Just something to think about while youre catching your breath from your Black Friday adventures,,,

SB and SOS sailed from CP2 at Chokoloskee at 3:50pm Wednesday 7th.  They reached East Cape at about 12:50am Thursday morning and rounded that point to tack due east into the wind.

Weather forecasts I had read made me worry that they would be hitting 20kt winds and 6 seas when they rounded that corner.  Instead, they described calmer conditions with the east wind being only about 10kts.  I tried to stay awake watching the SPOT display but fell asleep around 2:30am. Glad to see they arrived at CP3 in good shape at 3:30am today (Thursday.)

You would think they would sleep then, but with various chores to do (preparing to anchor or preparing to make sail, having meals, other chores, etc.)  they may have gotten only two hours sleep before they called home at 8:30am today.

Before hurrying away from the phone to leave CP3,  they briefly described their sail from CP2 to CP3.
They hugged the shoreline as much as possible for flatter water and less wind.  They sailed fulled reefed the whole way, which means no jib and the mainsail lowered 8.  (The top of the mast has a hook which catches the top of the mainsail,  and 8 down from that there is a reefing hook.)  Whenever they needed to tack or maneuver they roller-furled out some of the job. The boat tacks much more reliably with the job deployed.  The sailed fulled reefed because their speed was already adequate (7-10 kts) and the ride was drier.  SOS slept in the grand cabin for one and a half hours while SandyBottom single-handed on a long run.  At a different time SandyBottom slept on the trampoline for one and a half hours while SOS single handed.
SOS told me that SB was "very brave" going from CP2 to CP3.  SB told me "It was so scary. But Alans skills and expertise sailing the boat are amazing" (or equivalent words)

The "Mosquito" has not been using much of its sails: main, jib, huge Code Zero headsail. Its a boat ready for light air.  Instead, this year we have huge relentless winds.  The reefing abilities of the "Mosquito" satisfy the WaterTribes written rules for reefing, but I wonder if SOS is wishing he had a second reefing point in the mainsail so that he could be using a little mainsail and some jib most of the time.

At 9:30am today they sailed away from CP3.

Theres an opinion held by a great many that sailing is really hard work and judging by the way some people talk and outfit their boats you might even begin to believe it.

I dont.

The thing is, Im the first to admit that Im a pretty lazy guy. Its not so much that Im against hard work in a good cause but hard work for the sake of hard work when its not needful just isnt smart. Or to be a little bit clearer... Seriously dumb.

A well-designed boat should not involve a lot of hard work to sail it and, if youre having a hard time, there is a goodly chance that you have simply set the boat up badly, not sailing the boat correctly, or just doing something stupid.

By all means call me opinionated...

There is an excellent little video over at Off Center Harbor (you really do need to subscribe) showing a guy single handing his schooner in a no-muss-no-fuss-trauma-free fashion that shows just how easy sailing could be when you let the boat do most of the donkey work and keep things simple.

Boat Plans Arch Davis | Being grumpy over the cost of plywood in paradise

A little situational awareness, some not very good news, and needful to know...

Eighty bucks for 1/4" marine plywood. While not bad plywood as such things go its not good plywood that its $80-price tag would imply.

The equivilent plywood in Seattle would go for $40.25 cents a sheet.

Still, as I happen to need three sheets of the stuff for the new dinghy and a couple of sheets for in-progress interior wood butchery and carnage, I just may have to bite the bullet.

Truth be told, Im a big fan of using good exterior plywood for marine projects. In point of fact, a lot of the wood Ive just ripped out of So It Goes is 3/8" exterior ply which has held up finestkind since 1969 without the use of anything except some wood sealer and paint to protect it so, as far as Im concerned, good exterior with the addition of some epoxy makes all kinds of sense. The bad news is there is no such thing as good exterior grade plywood down here in paradise. So over-priced marine fir ply sems to be the only game in town.

Then again, $240 for plywood, $20 for lumber, and $60 for epoxy for a nesting dinghy is still a very affordable project so I should not really be complaining...
