When I posted the first video I sent it to some friends, including my daughter, a sailor too, with the comment that I would like one of those. My daughter commented that it would not take much time before I turned that cat upside down. I guess she would be right :-) but what a boat!!!!

Lately at the B and B shop we have finished the major fiberglassing of the starboard hull and slid it out the door. We can now start building the 4th and final "side" of the complete boat. The completed starboard hull will be living outdoors until the other side is caught up.

Here is a video of the move. As you can see, the hull is still relatively light weight and 4 of us (and Mandy, the dog) can maneuver it pretty easily by hand.

Boat Plans Skiff | FIRST REALLY FLYING MONOHULL QUANT 23

Well not really, the first one was the Moth but those can only be sailed by very skilled athletic sailors, kind of an equilibrist work all the time, like on a bicycle with only one wheel. Not so on the the Quant 28 (a scow) that goes on foils (also) but completely different type of foils, this ones an application of the DSS system developed by Hugh Welbourn.

Some amazing information regarding the boat sail performance:

... In the beginning in maybe 4-5 kts of breeze. When sailing upwind in conventional mode (boards up) with just two crew light like Roger and me (2x70kgs) You need the trapezoid from lets say solid 5kts. The boat with the right heeling angle goes 6.5 and more upwind Easily, in 8kts of true it is starting to plane upwind .. and we went on the foils doing 14kts Easily and later when breeze got up to almost 10tks we had 18.3 kts max on the counter and constantly over 16kts. 

The boat does fly steadily and it is not even really difficult to sail it on the foils with the right heeling angle....

...The task this time what to sail downwind as deep as possible fully out on the foil but with just main and jib. ...We clocked phenomenal - and more or less steady - 17.5 kts - with not much power in the sails anymore so thanks to much flatter profile i guess. We had a run of about 2km and maybe 700 m we did not touch the water once -...the scow shape Exactly does what it is supposed to do - little bump in the front section of the boat, loosing around 3kts of speed and back up again. 3 seconds later you are up on the old speed level again. Acceleration is therefore something you have to get used to - incredible.

Truly great and comparably easy to handle, we sailed just the two of us the whole day. So And we saw that this boat may be used in many different configurations - with the same amount of fun as the platform is so stable and it is leaving hull speed in almost no wind...

People looking at the boat sailing from a distance came to talk to us When back on the mooring. It was a surprise for them to see a monohull - They expected a catamaran.

Chapeau to the guys on Quant sailboats, they are doing a well of a work developing and applying DSS and pushing forward the sailing boundaries. :-)

Trimming a boat correctly is critical in maximizing efficiency, reducing fuel usage and also improving ride quality. Most boaters do this by “feeling” the boat under them, but there is a much better way of doing this.

Fuel flow meter

The use of fuel flow instruments is critical in determining the best trim position as it gives you fuel usage and does not rely on subjective “feel” from the skipper.

An example of this was done by a friend of mine who was operating 2x B150 Honda outboards. Whilst under way and operating at normal cruising speed, the fuel consumption for both engines was 56 litres per hour.

Trimming the engines up and down without touching the throttles and reading the fuel flow gauge, the fuel consumption went from 56 litres per hour down to 39 litres per hour. Overall, this is a savings of approx 30%, just from adjusting the boats trim while monitoring the fuel gauges.

Although fuel flow meters will more accurately provide details about trim position and fuel economy, they will not always be viable or practical in small tiller steered vessels. People with smaller boats need to spend time testing their boats by adjusting the tilt pin to suit the conditions that they normaly operate in. By adjusting the tilt pin, the attitude of the boat when underway will change the thrust line of the outboard resulting in two things – improved performance (fuel and speed) or less performance.  

  

An additional option to improve performance is to fix a Hydrofoil stabilising system to your outboard cavitation plate. With boats that are stern heavy, by providing max lift at the outboard using a hydrofoil, you can adjust the trim angle of the boat with greater efficiency.
The key is finding the tilt angle that best suits your regular load and usual conditions. 

Another problem with incorrect load distribution (too much weight aft) is "porpoising."

 Porpoising is the name given to the forward and back motion some boats make
while riding on the water. Picture a porpoise leaping through the water and you get the idea. It may be fine for them, but its murder on a boat’s performance, comfort and safety. This action is actually caused from too much weight at the back of the boat. In other words, incorrect weight distribution. This pounding causes many people to ride only in the very back of the boat. With correct load distribution and the use of Hydrofoils, this can correct this action, providing you with more comfort, safety and performance.

Ensuring the correct propeller choice is crucial for fuel economy, top end speed and hole shot (getting the boat out of the water at start up) unfortunately, many boat owners worry about their speed at a certain RPM when they should be more concerned about their outboard operating within the recommended range in which the outboard has been designed. Setting up to achieve a certain speed at a certain RPM is like pissing fuel into the wind. It usually results in an outboard not performing optimally across the RPM range for fuel and performance either in the bottom or top end range. Many boat owners go down the path of sourcing non-genuine props, believing it is the only way to go to gain improved performance. Unfortunately, any changes made to the boat for example load, application or configuration, the performance will change and it possible that a different prop will then be required.

To best assist you, I suggest it pays to seek advice from your outboard manufacturer through their dealer network of which you’ll need to provide the size of the prop, pitch diameter and max RPM with regular load, the mounting height of the outboard and your opinion of its performance in turning situations and hole shot. With this information, the dealer will be able to advise a prop that will deliver an improved result.

Setting up your boat for maximum efficiency isn’t easy. There more to it than prop, motor and boat.
Gross weight, weight distribution, motor height, weather and sea conditions all play a part, but I hope this has given you a few things to think about when it comes time to use your fishing rig. By being sensible with how you set up, use and power your rig, you might find that you have extra money in your pocket at the end of the day.

Gday all,

In the last couple of nights Ive got the front seat/storage in and cut out the transom.

It looking more like a boat with everything Im doing now.

My son & I will turn it over on the weekend, so I can glass the outside of the hull.

Grahams SporzMaster 19

Hi,

Heres a few more pictures.
I am fitting a 12 v windlass hence the change of access to anchor well. If it plays up I will be able to stow the rope from inboard making it safer.

The floors will be of Paulowina 14mm and the front 2 deck soles are ready for glassing and stiffening the undersides.

I was able to organise the scuppers using 45 degree fittings you need 400 mm + between Station 11 and the transom to fit and glass them.

Picked up a Suzuki 140 hp 2 stroke for a steal (22 Hours on the clock) so if you see a BLONDE Headed !!! geriatric hooning at 45 knots + that’s me.

All done!

When I painted the floor white it made the area look so much bigger. The mod’s worked out how I’d pictured it in my mind – very happy with the end result.
 
Not sure if I want to put forward steering - I like the idea of ‘floor space’.

The blogosphere is a big place and, while a lot of folks have gone over to Facebook and Twitter, blogs as a source of boat content, are still a great resource and I keep finding great ones all the time.

Sailing Dawn Treader is just such a blog. Great in-depth content of a practical sort. I like what theyre doing with their boat and there are a lot of good ideas that anyone could adapt. Whats not to love?

Gougeon 32 Refit is another blog with some great info coming down the pike. Ive always liked the Gougeon 32 catamaran and as Russel Brown really knows his way around multihulls, construction, and composites, having an up close and personal seat to Russels process of pimping out a G32 is just plain cool with a cherry on top.

The Whiskey Plank is Reuel Parker expounding on a great many things and all of them interesting. Made better by the fact that Parker tends to think about things from a slightly different perspective so just that little bit different even when hes writing about the same old same. Not only do I have his blog bookmarked but I save just about everything he writes regarding design and construction because I know Ill need them some day..

While we wait for having it on the water some new pictures and some interesting comments by the designers (Finot/Conq):

"To create a successor to the Pogo 10.50 and its huge success, we have designed the Pogo 36, using all the experience gathered from the latest models in the range.

This boat is slightly longer and wider, providing more space for the crew. The philosophy of a simple, light, fast and easy to handle sailing boat has been retained. The deck is simple and ergonomic, all winches are installed on the coachroof to be at the ideal working height. Composite coachroof coamings replace the fabric backrests. Again, there are two tillers at the back, that can be used both from the aft of the cockpit seats or from the sidedeck.

One of the new features is the bathroom located forward of the saloon, thereby providing space for two large aft cabins and a cabin in the front triangle.

A more visible novelty resides in the exterior design : The shipyard required a view to the front from the saloon, which, combined with the new position of the bathroom, led us to design coachroof windows bending towards the centerline.

Like all recent models of the range, the hull features a hard chine. It has been positionned as low as possible, the provide stability and power. The front volumes are quite full, to help the boat reach a nose-up attitude while planning.

Several versions of the hull were tested in CFD (computational fluid dynamics) using the FINE/Marine software package, to choose the final hull shape.

The backstay-less rig has only one set of spreaders and a square-top mainsail.

The carbon fiber mast is stepped quite far aft for a better balance of genoa and mainsail areas. This also increses the mainsails aspect ratio for better performance. The composite, 1090kg keel is lifting (rotating), like all the other boats of the range. A fixed keel version will also be offered."

Just a comment to the last image (CFC study): I know that those beamy transoms are very misleading in what regards the waterplane of the boat but it is always very instructive to see how misleading they are. We can see also what was referred by the designers: a huge buoyancy on the forward sections of the boat that as they say will keep the bow up at planing speeds.
