Boat Plans Aluminium | a quick thought on tools and toys

Boat Plans Aluminium

A cost of bad policing, something you need to read, and NASA doing it right...

The other day I was looking at the interior of a nice yacht with a lot of beautiful interior wood, lush fabrics, and a lust inspiring media center focused around a 66" ultra-HD 4K video screen and it inspired two cascading thoughts...

"Boy, Id love to hang out in this boat"

and...

"What a horridly unseamanlike interior for a cruising boat"

Sadly, I find this is pretty much my reactions to most newer designs I look at these days which all seem great on comfort to the Nth degree but are sadly lacking in the practical needs of someone cruising in the real world.

Maybe its the fact that today cruising boats are thought of as toys rather than tools while a generation ago it was all about being a tool and not a toy...

Kayak Boat Plans | a quick reflection on a 25 000 mile sack of groceries

Kayak Boat Plans

Concrete canoes, somewhat worrying, and, for some, it would seem that the gravy trains going bye-bye...

The other day i went shopping for a few things and could not help but marvel at a few things. For instance, I bought two carrots (99-cents a pound) which hailed from Canada, a few apples ($2.59 a pound) from Washington State, and some chicken thighs ($1.99 a pound) which Im pretty sure was grown and slaughtered in the US of A but shipped to China where it was cut up into pieces and then shipped back to the US of A where it would be shipped on to the Caribbean.

To say this is just plain nuts would be something of an understatement...

Then again, maybe the fact that Im at the tail end of the supply chain and have regular reminders of what happens when the supply chain has hiccups or breaks down for short periods makes me over-sensitive because its just a normal part of living in the Caribbean.

Maybe so, but I still think theres something scary when you find yourself in the situation where everything in your shopping bag has traveled at least 3000 (or more) miles so you can make lunch. We really do seem to be taking a lot for granted thinking that the current transport system will continue to function along the current business model.

Just saying...

Boat Plans Bateau | a quick note on what it takes to be happy

Boat Plans Bateau

About that so-called "Persecution", a little situational awareness, and some old good advice...

I was reading an old cruising log the other day detailing a familys cruise from the UK to the Med then on to the Caribbean and back to the UK and it reminded me just how much cruising has changed in the last thirty years.

They didnt have electronics of any sort. Not even a radio. Lighting was kerosene as was the stove and there was no ice box with the more perishable provisions being simply kept in the bilge.

Their boat (an Eventide) was all of 26-feet for the four of them with not so much an inkling of mutiny...

Oh yeah, they also seemed to be having a great time in the process.

Wooden Boat Plans Australia | A quick look at some numbers

Wooden Boat Plans Australia

Krugman asks a question, news that will make you want to repeatedly bash your head against a bulkhead, and in the "things that glow in the dark department"...

The other day I was looking at the changes of population in the Caribbean and it was/is depressing reading.

For instance, heres the population stats for the USVI but if you bother to look into the rest of the Caribbean youre going to see the same story played out...

YearPop.±%
190130,527—
191127,086  ?11.3%
191726,051?3.8%
193022,012?15.5%
194024,889+13.1%
195026,665+7.1%
196032,099+20.4%
197062,468+94.6%
198096,569+54.6%
1990101,809+5.4%
2000108,612+6.7%
2010  106,405?2.0%

Scary numbers when you think about it. An even scarier number is that in 2008 the population density was measured at 162 people per square kilometer.

The increased population combined with a unsustainable economy, an infrastructure way past its sell-by date, and a total lack of anyone in power actually doing anything remotely constructive to fix things does not a pretty picture make.

Or, to put it in common parlance, its all going to hell in a turbo charged wicker basket. So, if you plan to visit and cruise down here Id do it sooner rather than later...

Boat Plans Wood | A quick thought about boom bust economics

Boat Plans Wood

Mind numbing, someones making sense, and, considering hes a man who would actually know, Id say this statement is important...

A friend of mine, who has been looking for a boat for some time, pointed out that he thought the price of decent fixer upper boats would keep falling and only an idiot would buy a boat at the moment.

Me, Im not so sure.

Bubbles confronted with reality always burst sooner or later. Its just a fact of life.

Where boats are concerned it is only a matter of time before folks are going to wake up and realize it is bad economics to sell a boat for less than the price of the lead in its keel...

On a side note, one of the fastest growing  criminal activities in the US of A is the theft of raw materials from buildings and infrastructure... Copper wire/pipe, aluminum, steel, and lead being the most sought after.

Just something to keep in mind...

Boat Plans Wood | a couple of quick multihull thoughts

Boat Plans Wood

Some needful reading, a good article on murder rates, and a very interesting proposal...

As most of you are aware, Im a big fan of Reuel Parker and think that anyone building a boat really needs to have read his "The New Cold-Molded Boatbuilding". Plus his designs are way cool...

Then again, theres this puppy...

...or, as I usually refer to it, the condo from hell. Of course, with modern multihull design and aesthetics being what they are these days, it would fit right in with whats out there. But, one really does expect better from a designer who draws such beautiful boats.

I suspect Mr Parker gave the client exactly what he asked for...

However, if you look closely at the design, I cant help but conjecture that there is a Wharramesque cat crying out to be released from its burden of the bridgedeck monstrosity someone stuck on its back.

An open bridgedeck with, maybe, a small pod would be less expensive, cheaper/faster to build, and perform a whole lot better as a result. All of a sudden Im finding this design a lot more interesting the minute the bridgedeck cabin gets left out of the mix.

Offhand, if I were thinking of building something like a Wharram, Im pretty sure Id give Parker a call and see what he might come up with the same sort of brief... Which is not to say that I dont like Wharrams (I built a Tiki 31) I do but, as there is a dearth of open bridgedeck cat designs, a little new blood and insight would be no bad thing at all.

Just thinking out loud...

Boat Trailer Plans Australia | a quick thought

Boat Trailer Plans Australia

An important question, double standard justice, and just the same old same Florida anchoring BS...

So, Dave Z and I have been having a discussion on various subjects and something he said got me thinking about boats, the internet, and how they fit together.

If I say something like...

You can do something.

It does not mean that I think you should. Im simply pointing out that something is possible.

If I were to point out that a self-built dinghy that only requires oars or a small outboard is a much more economical choice than a big RIB with a fifteen HP or larger outboard, Im in no way saying you should have a small rowing dinghy but simply pointing out a simple economical fact of the difference between those two choices.

Part of the reason Im so attracted to the sailing/cruising gig is simply that you can pretty much do what you want as were joyfully unfettered for the most part. Sadly, there seems more and more pressure to constrain and quash that freedom.

Truth be told, Id really hate to be part of that menace that tells people they have to do something a certain way and be part of the pressure that forces people to conform and become sheep.

Choice is cool but it comes at a cost. Just the other day while I rowed past a boat picking up its anchor the guy on the foredeck called out to us with a clever (well, at least he thought it was) jibe concerning rowing and Lin & Larry Pardey. Im sure he felt all kinds of superior having put me in my place but it did not bother me to the point that Id go out and buy a 12-foot RIB with a 35HP outboard to better fit in because of what some dork thinks.

Which is not to say there was not a certain amount of irritation but thats just the cost of doing business your way instead of following the herd.
