Boat Building Plans And Kits | I suppose it was just a matter of time

Boat Building Plans And Kits

Just plain barbaric, how clean air is not as important as profits, and, if you happen to need some wedding photography, you might want to check out these folks...

Kayak Boat Plans | On the fact that Im simply tired of getting depressed when I read boat ads

Kayak Boat Plans

Something interesting/scary, video meets the memory hole, and in the ongoing "Attack of the PFD Nazis" department...

This morning I saw that a boat I know was still for sale and had been recently reduced in price... It got me thinking about how everyone makes mistakes. In this case, a young couple bought a boat that was as close to perfection (in their mind) as they could find, spent a sizable chunk of money making it even better, and then discovered, for one reason or another, that cruising simply did not suit them.

Sort of a bummer that.

Of course, this is not an isolated incident and, over a fair amount of years, Ive seen this scenario play out time and time again and, at the end of the story, there is always a boat with so much invested in it selling at a deep discount. To say its depressing is something of a gross understatement. So, just a little advice...

Get yourself a cheap boat in decent shape and just go cruising.

Go cruising for six months or a year and find out if you actually want to cruise. An old Pearson Triton, a CAL 29, or a Hunter 33 will tell you everything you need to know about cruising and if in the process you discover you want to cruise full time you can always buy a nicer/better boat with added smarts on what a better/nicer boat actually is.

That said, if you find you dont actually like being on a boat you can then sell your cheap Pearson/CAL/Hunter for around what you have invested in it or at most a minuscule loss.

Just saying...

Small Boat Plans And Kits | L I T and a new use for the ubiquitous boat bucket

Small Boat Plans And Kits

Erin Brockovich making sense, stuff you need to know, and, sadly, the great Dan Hicks is no longer with us...

OK, Ill be the first to admit I suffer from a bad case of L.I.T. (Limited Imbecile Tolerance) and it most often manifests itself when anchors and the process of anchoring are involved.

So, yet another cunning plan in the ever fruitless saga of my finding even more sordid and heinous ways to keep people from anchoring on top of me...

Did you know that Remo just came out with a very boat friendly drum head?

Even better, Im pretty sure that if you buy a half-dozen you get a pretty deep discount!

Boat Plans African Queen | Wow an inflatable I just might consider buying

Boat Plans African Queen

Dengue a serious problem in Hawaii, the sound of silver spoon babies crying in the night, and I cant say Im surprised anymore at heinous Republican hijinks but I do still wonder just how low can you go and sleep at night...

Yowza, finally someone has come up with a good use for inflatable technology!

Too bad it does not have anything to do with boats...

Boat Plans Wooden | OK I admit Im at a loss

Boat Plans Wooden

An island of interest, a question of justice, and in the "outrageous" department...

Has anyone seen a really clever (dare I say cunning?) method of stowing a pair of bikes on a sub forty-foot sailboat?

If so, care to share?

Boat Building Plans And Kits | What I wish Santa would bring me

Boat Building Plans And Kits

A little bit of interesting history, a lot of truth in faux publicité, and in the "lies have consequences" department...

This is seriously cool!

The problem with all the boat-friendly washing machines Ive come across is they really have no real or decent rinse/spin capability which everyone knows is the heinous part of doing laundry on a boat. The Drumi, on the other hand, looks like (just maybe) it might actually do the job. Its a chunk of change but with a small load at a Caribbean laundromat costing $3.50 or more these days it would pay for itself in a reasonable amount of time and dispense with the dreaded evil trip to the laundromat blues. So, color me interested.

Boat Plans Wooden | Where do I build my dinghy

Boat Plans Wooden

Many years ago when we first launched our 42 ft liveaboard catamaran, a tender was the last thing on our minds. For those that have built before, I’m sure we’ve all gone through this, running around checking everything to make sure that when the crane arrives to drop you last few years of hard work and money into the water, the tender…well that’s the last thing you want to think about.

So, with the crane now gone and your pride and joy now floating, you crank up the motor and move it into it’s pen and now its time to move aboard properly.

After a couple of days and all the excitment begins to die down, its time to start thinking about the first sail. So do I build or buy? So, with so much going on, I found this pram up for sale and ripped around and bought it. Crikey, heavy.. but it will do. I can always do something better later on when I find the time and place to do it. We’ll, we took the dinghy out and damn..what a dog. Always wet, couldn’t carry a real load and heavy as hell. So after a couple of weeks, we decide to crank up the sails and head south to the WhitSunday Islands and camp out there for a while.

First job though on arriving had to be a new dinghy. But what do I build? Where do I build?  A friend of mine a dinghy he drew up and built , so he gave us the outline for it. That’ll do, as it had to be better than the piece of junk we had. It was a typical flat bottom dory around 13ft long and 4 ft wide, not a flash boat, but it had to be better than that damn pram.

Arriving at the WhitSundays, we ripped around to Muddy Bay at high tide, spun the boat around, kicked the pick over and backed in onto the beach, tieing up to the coconut palms, and beaching the boat on the sand (stern to) with a park right behind us. Top spot. Got a place to build !

Right next to us was an elderly gentleman who lived full time on his yacht on the beach and talking with him he was looking for a small dinghy to get back and forwards to his boat during high Tide. So we sold the dinghy to him for a carton of beer. Good trade ! Looking around the park, I spotted the “Table of Knowledge” (the park bench and table) Asking a fellow neighbours if I minded using it, they replied “Go for it”

The Table of Knowledge
So we ripped up to the Hardware store, grabbed some ply, then back to the park, threw the generator along with the epoxy and boatbuilding tools over the side and rip, tear bust, we were into it. It didn’t take long though before our friendly neighbours turned up and threw a beer into my hand.

“Crikey Mate, bit murky and warm” I commenting about th beer.

“Straight out of the home brew keg. Warm? Whadda ya talkin’ bout, it’s been in the shade!” (it was only 27 degrees in the shade)

“Cheers” I said, straining the murky beer thru my back teeth.

So over the next 3 days as we built part time between lazing about, watching our youngest learn to play chess with a fellow yachtie whilst our eldest swam and walked the boat with her net catching prawns, we cut out the plywood parts, then stitched and taped the boat together and painted her ready for launching. Then on the 4th day, she was launched. What a cracker compared to the last piece of junk! So we kept this boat as our tender for the next 12 months until it was time to build another.
Launched
A “V” bottom hull. Now we’re talking about a real boat ! And the Mushulu 12 was concieved!

So, it just goes to show that if you really want a boat, you can build a boat just about anywhere !!

Boat Plans African Queen | SOLARIS 50 I LOVE IT!!!

Boat Plans African Queen

I had already posted about the Solaris 50:

http://interestingsailboats.blogspot.pt/2014/10/solaris-50.html and I had said only nice things about it but now I have seen the boat in Dusseldorf and I was greatly impressed. This is not only a very beautiful boat but also the kind of boat that I would have if I won the lottery.

And for the quality I ended up not finding it extravagantly expensive at 570000 euros, VAT included,  lot less then what would cost an Halberg Rassy 48 with a similar built quality.

On the link above you can check out what I had said about the boat dimensions but I will add that with a beam of 4.55m is significantly narrower then most production main market boats (Sense 50-4.86m; Hanse 505-4.75m; Sun Odyssey 509-4.69m; Bavaria cruiser 51-4.67m), has a bigger B/D ratio, a more efficient keel and a considerably bigger draft (or in option a smaller draft and an even bigger B/D ratio). This extra keel efficiency and superior B/D ratio will give not only a more powerful boat but also one with a better reserve stability.

The 14 200kg of weight are very similar to the one of the above main market cruisers even considering that this weight, contrary to the others is not an empty weight but but the one of a boat in sailing condition with half tankage. So it is not a particularly light boat but consider that contrary to the others this is a vacuum infused cored boat (Airex) using vynilester-epoxy resins with carbon reinforcements and one that can have carbon spars.

Knowing that they have 40 years of experience building boats that means that this boat is overbuilt and all that extra weight is aimed to increase boat strength. They not only use bulkheads laminated to the deck and hull as they use composite cored laminates on the two main bulkheads to  diminish dilatation problems between two different materials. The idea is to built a kind of monoblock boat increasing overall stiffness.

If someone wants to know more here there is a detailed specification:
http://www.messink.nl/pdf/Specs%20SOLARIS_50_EN_SS_0714.pdf

Many looking at this boat would say: Another pretty fragile boat designed for med sailing. Well, fragile it is not and a boat doesnt have to be ugly to be very seaworthy and strong and Solaris is a paradigma regarding that. Besides the winch position, the self tacking jib and mainsheet system (that can have a traveler or not) everything is designed taking into account solo or short crew sailing.

A word regarding handholds that were almost absent on the 50ft at Dusseldorf: They are mounted to the owner request. You can see that on the Solaris 58 that is side by side with the 50. There are handrails on the deck while the 50 has none. Those steel handrails can also be mounted on the interior ceiling also.

The sprayhood is very interesting: it can be stowed and completely covered on a space provided for that on the cabin or deployed and... surprise surprise, it is an huge one that forms a completely covered enclosure. I would like to have seen that, as well as how it fits on the storage space and how much time it takes to deploy but they did not have it at Dusseldorf.

Finally in what regards storage this boat is one of the few 50ft that offers a garage with enough space for a small dinghy and a forward sail locker/storage space with considerable dimensions. On long range cruising, while crossing oceans the dinghy can be deflated and the extra garage space can be  used for extra storage.

Boat Plans Aluminium | COMET CAT 50

Boat Plans Aluminium

Initially Comar announced as first cats on his new cat line  a 37 and a 62:
http://interestingsailboats.blogspot.pt/2014/04/comet-and-cats-37-and-62.html. The 62 is still on the agenda, the 37 is almost on the water but the next to follow will be a 50 that Comar describes as an Oceanic sailboat:

"The Comet 50 and Cat was developed with the intention of making a fast oceanic high performance comfortable. The project still in the preliminary stage has the ambition to become a point of reference for all fans of catamarans that aim to travel the world in safety and comfort with daily averages impossible to a monohull or heavy catamaran with relative small sail areas...The boat will be built in composite with extensive use of carbon on the most stressed areas."

The design is from Marc Lombard and the cat 50 will weight only 11000kg. It will have a lot of stability due to a large beam (7.30m) and low CG, will have long dagerboards (2,45m draft) that are not visible on the drawings (rotating ones?).
It will be a very fast sailboat, able to carry a lot of sail: Mainsail 87.3m2, Genoa 130% 55m2, code zero 115m2, Spy asymmetric 160m2. The tankage will be considerable (600L of water 360L of diesel) and it will have two powerful 60hp engines. It looks nice to me, lets hope the price is a nice one too ;-)

Boat Blind Plans | I really hate shopping spending money

Boat Blind Plans

An interesting puzzle, the moist sounds of pigshit hitting skin, and todays word is philanthrocapitalism...

So, with the Black Friday orgy of consumer excess and debauchery just around the corner, Ive been looking at the need/want list to see if I happen to actually need anything for "So It Goes" that might actually get discounted enough to buy.

Which is why I went and checked out West and Defender yesterday and came away from the experience saying to myself...

What sort of idiot do they think I am?

Thats actually a good question because its very apparent that they really dont seem to hold their customers in a very high regard these days.

Anyway, the only thing thats really on my want list is an AIS transponder... Not so much because I actually need such a thing (I already have an AIS receiver) but the fact that Thailand now requires an AIS transponder for anyone cruising their waters so its only a matter of time till other cruising destinations follow suit to join the fraternity of police states needing to monitor me 24/7/365.

Kind of a bummer that...

With the prospect of being forced to buy required expensive electronics in the not too far distant future it seems semi-sensible to buy one now before the prices go way the fuck up.
