Boat Plans Aluminum | ALMAS LOG CRUISING PHOTOS

Boat Plans Aluminum

For the ones that dont know ALMA is the name of my boat and as most had already find out I am still cruising and posting very rarely on this blog. If you are a cruiser maybe you will find interesting  a report that I intend to post about the Ionian (my cruising ground this year), with some nice pictures.

But for now if you want to have a taste of it (and see some pictures) you can have a look at my facebook page:

https://www.facebook.com/paulo.pernao

Fact is that the internet I have is so slow that I cannot even upload a decent photo to this post.

In about a month I will be posting again...lots of yachts to talk about and other subjects too. Till than I wish to all fair winds and great sailing.

Boat Designs And Plans | RM 1070 FIRST TEST

Boat Designs And Plans

By voile magazine, and one of the long ones, a 100nm test. The magazine is available on Zinio but I can advance that they only say good things. It was the twin keel version and it performed as expected and that means well. They gave some numbers: 15K wind 8K speed, 40º TRW 6.5K speed. Not a mean machine upwind but not bad, considering the twin keel setup. A boat for voyaging on the trade winds and certainly one of the best at that, size by size.
As usual on this type of very large transoms the engine performance was poor and the cruising speed is just 5.5K. Anyway this is a sailboat and the 80L of diesel tankage does not give it a big autonomy while on engine.

Wooden Boat Plans Australia | DJANGO 7 70 VERSUS FIRST 33 7

Wooden Boat Plans Australia

Two friends one with a Django 7.70 other with a First 33.7 decided to make a kind of test sail between the two boats. I know, not fair, the First is considerably bigger and an older design but even so I found interesting the video and the comments on You tube:
Not a great video too since both boats are not shown sailing side by side but the information is interesting: With very light winds the First 33.7 is faster upwind and points better. With 20/25k winds the Django is a bit faster and more responsive. Well I would like more information but thats the only thing they say :-)

Small Boat Plans And Kits | VERY INTERESTING AZUREE 33C

Small Boat Plans And Kits

Not really a new boat, just a MKII but one that took away the biggest defect from the previous boat: it was not properly nice, even if a great boat at a very good price. Now you have all the previous qualities in a much nicer sailboat with a big and customizable interior. If I was looking for a 33ft sailboat I would be looking hard at this one:

Azuree 33C: LET YOUR CREATIVITY SET SAIL from Azuree Sailing on Vimeo.

The older model come out with bright colors from the last "Middle the sea race", raced on gale conditions. Many boats abandoned the race but the smaller of them all, the little Azuree 33, sailed only by a duo (one of them the NA) keep pushing and made a remarkable race.

Boat Plans Catamaran | REVOLUTION 29 VIRTUAL VISIT

Boat Plans Catamaran

While waiting the first one to be built the shipyard posted a very interesting virtual visit that really can give an idea of the boat interior volume. Looking at it I wonder that can be a very satisfactory space for a single guy to live aboard, on a boat that is rock solid, can sail and moor in very swallow waters (where places to moor can still be found) and offers as a plus a satisfactory sailing performance. It can actually pay himself substituting a  rented home and offer a sailboat as a bonus ;-).

Boat Plans Skiff | FIRST REALLY FLYING MONOHULL QUANT 23

Boat Plans Skiff

Well not really, the first one was the Moth but those can only be sailed by very skilled athletic sailors, kind of an equilibrist work all the time, like on a bicycle with only one wheel. Not so on the the Quant 28 (a scow) that goes on foils (also) but completely different type of foils, this ones an application of the DSS system developed by Hugh Welbourn.

Some amazing information regarding the boat sail performance:

... In the beginning in maybe 4-5 kts of breeze. When sailing upwind in conventional mode (boards up) with just two crew light like Roger and me (2x70kgs) You need the trapezoid from lets say solid 5kts. The boat with the right heeling angle goes 6.5 and more upwind Easily, in 8kts of true it is starting to plane upwind .. and we went on the foils doing 14kts Easily and later when breeze got up to almost 10tks we had 18.3 kts max on the counter and constantly over 16kts.

The boat does fly steadily and it is not even really difficult to sail it on the foils with the right heeling angle....

...The task this time what to sail downwind as deep as possible fully out on the foil but with just main and jib. ...We clocked phenomenal - and more or less steady - 17.5 kts - with not much power in the sails anymore so thanks to much flatter profile i guess. We had a run of about 2km and maybe 700 m we did not touch the water once -...the scow shape Exactly does what it is supposed to do - little bump in the front section of the boat, loosing around 3kts of speed and back up again. 3 seconds later you are up on the old speed level again. Acceleration is therefore something you have to get used to - incredible.

Truly great and comparably easy to handle, we sailed just the two of us the whole day. So And we saw that this boat may be used in many different configurations - with the same amount of fun as the platform is so stable and it is leaving hull speed in almost no wind...

People looking at the boat sailing from a distance came to talk to us When back on the mooring. It was a surprise for them to see a monohull - They expected a catamaran.

Chapeau to the guys on Quant sailboats, they are doing a well of a work developing and applying DSS and pushing forward the sailing boundaries. :-)

Plywood Boat Plans Australia | RM 1070 A GOOD SURPRISE

Plywood Boat Plans Australia

I had already posted about the new RM 1070. At the time little was known about the boat and looked to me a 1060 MKII with a new bow and a swing keel to join to the other keel options. After all the 1060 is only 4 years old:
http://interestingsailboats.blogspot.pt/2014/09/rm1070.html

And the good surprise is that incredibly this is a brand new boat. Not only the bow is different but all the hull, including a very different transom...and I like it a lot more than the 1060 :-) The interior is different too with a true cabin at the bow. I hope it will be in Dusseldorf. I want very much to see this one. It looks absolutely gorgeous and I bet it will sail better than the 1060 and the 1060 sailed  very well.

The difference at the bow is easy to spot, being inverted and all but the transom one, even if evident requires a look at the two. As you can see very different, being the new one very near the one of an Open 60 in design. This boat will have a huge form stability and will be very easy to sail fast downwind, being even more powerful than the 1060.

About the light wind performance and upwind sailing I have some doubts that it will be better. Time and the first tests will tell.
There is just one thing I dont like: Why have they maintained, on the two wheel version, the winches on a position that only makes sense on the rudder version? On the two wheel version at least one of those winches (on each side) should be moved near the wheel, at reach of the Welshman.

Regarding the previous boat the beam is practically the same (4.00m), the hull is slightly bigger (10.69/10.57m) and the LWL bigger( 10.50/10.30), the boat will be a bit heavier (4900/4600kg) probably on the swing keel configuration. The new Swing keel will have 1.15/2.92m. The boat will be more powerful and will carry more sail (72.50/71.6m2).

Boat Plans Aluminum | THE POGO CAT TS 42

Boat Plans Aluminum

No, it is not made by Structures the shipyard that makes Pogo but I am not the only one to see the similarity in what regards the concept: A shipyard specialized on racing boats (Marsaudon composites), a cruising boat designed almost as a racing boat with a spartan interior that allows a relatively low price for this type of boat and performance.

I like it a lot, a design by Cristophe Barreau, a specialist in cats, the designer of the Outremer 49 and 45 also of many Catana, has a different approach on this design that is more radical than the Outremer 45, starting with beam that is fundamental for the power of a cat: 7.39m for this one against 7.1m on the Outremer 45 that is a bigger boat with 13.77m against 13.06m (LOA).

The Outremer 45 weights 8.7T and the TS42 5.8T, a huge difference that is reflected on the needed sail area: 110m2 wit jib, 159m2 with the gennaker for the Outremer,  89.4m2 with a self tacking jib, 126m2 with the gennaker for the TS 42.

The boat is not a carbon one but a top Eglass, using infusion, cored hulls and decks (PVC as core), aluminium boom and mast. The interior is very simple but functional and comfortable in a zen kind of way.

For reducing costs and to make it simpler the TS 42 has fixed keels but I would be very curious  to see a comparative test sail of the two boats, on the water, and I am not sure that the Outremer would be faster, but I am absolutely sure that the TS 42 is much more affordable: It costs about 336 000 euros without VAT, the Outremer 45 also without VAT costs 470 000 euros.
Of course these prices refer to basic boats, a well equipped boat will cost substantially more and thats the problems with Cats. Even the less expensive TS42, with the European Tax and some extras will cost 450/500 000 euros, much more than a Pogo 12.50 that costs less than 300 000 euros, with Tax and full equipped.

But the TS42 will cost a lot less than a Pogo 50 that costs more than 600 000 euros and I am not sure that if I had the 600 000 euros to give for a performance cruiser I would choose the Pogo 50 over the TS 42, probably not.

The Pogo 12.50 will make about the same thing as the TS42 boat, with the same or more seaworthiness and it will cost much less even sailing a bit slower and regarding that it will depend on whether the boat is racing or cruising. The TS42 will be certainly a blast but it will need a lot of attention to go really fast, not a thing that I would like to do on autopilot or solo, at least with strong winds.
There are a lot more sailors with 300 000 euros to give for a performance cruiser than the ones that can give the extra 150 000 to have the TS42 and thats a shame because the TS42 looks awesome and should sail like a dream. I am sure that the Pogo 12.50 will remain a very popular boat while the TS42 will be a much more exclusive sailboat, but I sure would love to have one ;-)

Boat Plans Pdf | GITANA OPEN 60 ON FOILS BEAUTIFULL

Boat Plans Pdf

I am convinced: the foils do work even on very nasty weather and the Open 60s (IMOCA) continue to lead in what regards significant technological monohull advances as they have been doing for some decades. Just beautiful the movie, some of this years best sailing footage.

Boat Plans Wooden | first sail

Boat Plans Wooden

fist go in a moth for quite a while! needless to say i was a pro and not rusty at all... anyway there wasnt too much skill required, it was just a quick check of the boat to make sure everything was going together well. It was 8-10 knots so perfect for a first go.

almost everything worked and didnt break. even though i hardly sanded the foil and there were pin-holes all through it, the boat lifted off pretty early. you could feel the skin friction so with a bit of bog and paint i reckon it will go well. much, much better already than the last foil. about half the weight too. the second attempt at the horizontal came out lighter again. the sikaflex hinge let go though. i hit the bottom once, and i think the tip got ripped off a bit and after that it started to separate. does anyone know exactly which Sikaflex youre supposed to use? i just used whatever one i had that was open. i might try a hidden hinge system of some sort, even if it means i have to make a new flap.

the dial thing works well. i was a bit skeptical but the lever and rope that i have going is really effective in controlling the ride height. basically the wand pivot fitting is upside down so everything is in tension, and then the lever just slightly adjusts the length of the rope between the wand and bell crank. i have a slight problem with rope stretch/spring, but i think that will improve with use and you can compensate for it with the system.

the wand pivot is strong and declared good. basically its a Harken ball-bearing sheave stolen from an old block glassed into the hull. i modified it a bit so by tensioning the bolt you control the friction/slop on the sheave and hopefully find the happy medium. very direct, straight and very low friction under load.

the AOA adjuster on the centreboard works well except as it it you cant adjust it when the boards in the boat, because of the centreboard case prongs. bit of crap management but ill sort that out. eventually i think it will have a dial too or some other way of moving it on the water.

the weird kingpost i made seems fine but not yet tested in breeze. the cleat attachments are interesting and they seem to work. i did that because i couldnt fit them on otherwise, without buying new cleats. and the small stainless ones were like $80 each. the vang retainer is good as well - i got the angles right so the vang doesnt tighten up as you ease sheet, like it used to. wave peircing bow also a tick - i have the same freeboard as the assassin but heaps more volume because the old girl is a lot fatter, so the boat sits higher in the water and sails quite well lowriding. the water sheds well off the peaked foredeck. i reckon a proper wave piercer with no compression strut is definitely on the cards at some stage. i think it has legs. i dont actually mind the fatter hull when i think about it, because it will keep the freeboard down and thats less windage. i think i could cut another 50mm off the freeboard and 50mm off the rocker of this boat.

the gantry is shit but hasnt broken yet. the product of a vacuum bag that got a hole in it. i chucked it on anyway, but i think ill do something different. i really like the assassin gantry, might do something like that.

the flat wingbars also work. in fact the boat is noticeably easier to sail as a lowrider, really nice to sail as a foiler and much cooler looking. the little wings are good - i cant imagine they need to be bigger, actually could be smaller again.

the rudder is the final thing. i designed one already for Sam Schneiders SR71 foiler. it looks about right, at some point ill scale it back down and pull some moulds off it. ill make the rudder foil available for download from the blog too at some point.

so im going overseas now, so the boat will be mothballed for a while. but its all set up for some serious tuning when i get back! really pleased i got it sailing before i left.

this is a good way to do the moulds if youre going to cnc it. helps to keep everything straight because the MDF is so crap with heat. that said, id minimise the use of MDF because it shrunk fairly considerably in the oven. no big deal as long as you let the foil cure before you heat it, as i did because i accidentally didnt turn the oven on! the first time round i used chip board glued to MDF, so the mould surface was still in the MDF but the whole thing had a 18mm chip board backing, and that didnt shrink as much.

below is a comparison of my foil and the assassin foil. area is pretty similar.

Boat Plans Bolger | DUO AND SOLO TRANSATS JACQUES VABRE 2015

Boat Plans Bolger

While we wait for the Mini-Transat to re-start (all have already arrived to Lanzarote) lets have a look at the Transat Jacques Vabre, a 22 year old race that this year will have the additional interest of seeing the comparative performance of the new Open 60s on foils with the older ones. The Jacques Vabre is a global duo race meaning that even if we have different classifications we will also be able to see the comparative performance between maxi trimarans, 50ft trimarans, Open 60s and 40class racers. Several races in one.
The race starts this month in France (Le Havre) and finishes in Brazil (Itajaí), a long Transat. 42 boats have already signed up, the majority Open 60s (20). a race to follow for sure, not only very interesting as with a site in English and Portuguese too (besides French): http://www.transat-jacques-vabre.com/en
Some movies about the race and the racers:

Pontoon Boat Plans Aluminum | A VOR65 LOST ON THE REEFS movie

Pontoon Boat Plans Aluminum

Really sad, a beautiful brand new boat abandoned on a reef on the middle of nowhere, 260nm out of Mauritius Islands. All are well and have already been picked up. The boat, Vestas, was one of the competitors on the Volvo Ocean Race, a circumnavigation race. Pretty incredibly the way they did not notice that they had a small Island ahead. They did not grounded the boat on some isolated reef outside the Island but almost at the middle of it, 6NM from the beginning. I guess they were too much concentrated on racing to make a decent navigation :-(

Kayak Boat Plans | MINI TRANSAT THE FIRST LEG IS FINISHED

Kayak Boat Plans

But of course the first leg means nothing and it is to win the race that counts. Even so the best are already on the head of the race. On Proto the first to arrive to the Canary Islands was Davy Beudart, the 2nd Axel Trehin and the 3rd Frederic Denis. Here some movies with them:
In what regards boat design nothing surprising, the bath-tube bow and a David Raison boat continues to win and with a considerable advantage over the 2nd that is an older Lombard design (2008). The 3rd is also a Lombard design, but a more recent one (2011). In what regards the serie boats (production boats) the battle for first has been a lot more hard, maybe because there are a lot more racers on this category. Ian Lipinsky came first followed closely by Tanguy le Turquais and Charly Fernbach. Some movies with them and their boats: Regarding boat design we also have three different designs on the first 3 places but in this case they are all new designs: The first is a Bertrand design, built by the NA himself, the 2nd a Lombard design built by Argo and the third a Pogo 3. Those boats are really amazing, relatively cheap and with a performance not very far from the protos, that are all carbon boats with canting keels. The difference between the first proto and the first serie was of about 18 hours but if we consider the 2nd the difference was only 10 hours and only 8 protos (in 26) managed to do better than the first serie mini. To really see that huge difference between the two boats, in what regards high tech materials and building, lets have a look at a Pogo 3 and Davy Beudart proto:
For following the race (in English, French or Spanish), with a real time map click here: http://www.minitransat-ilesdeguadeloupe.fr/. It starts again in some days (not all the boats have finished), now towards Guadalupe.

Boat Plans Aluminium Australia | SAFRAN THE FIRST NEW GENERATION IMOCA OPEN 60

Boat Plans Aluminium Australia

Beating the new Banque Populaire, the new Safran is on the water. Morgan Lagraviere will be the skipper, coached by the old Safran skipper Marc Guillemot. The boat was designed by Vincent Lauriot Prévost (VPLP) and Guillaume Verdier. It has foils, it is beamier then the previous boat, the CG (mast and keel) was moved back to lighten the forward section and the bow is larger and more rounded increasing also the buoyancy on the forward section of the boat. All this will make it easier to lift the bow that probably will be very important to increase foils efficiency.
Waiting for the first sailing movies, these two give a good view of the boat that is a beauty:

Boat Plans Pdf | GORGEOUS KER 33!!!

Boat Plans Pdf

This beauty, contrary to other KER, will be a relatively affordable boat: It is not a carbon one but an Eglass cored boat with aluminium spars standard (carbon option) and everything was made to bring the price down without compromising too much performance. The price without taxes will round 145 000 Euros.

It has a moderate beam hull (3.36m), a not very deep torpedo keel (2.00m), it will be relatively heavy (3750kg) and that means probably a very big B/D ratio that will be put at good use upwind by the typically Ker designed transom (without chines). A boat that will be more at ease in crewed racing than on solo or short crewed racing.

It has a powerful engine (30hp), an interior that allows offshore racing (3 double berths and a good galley) or even some spartan but certainly fast cruising.

The boat is manufactured by McConaghy in China and I bet it will be a success. There are already several commands. It is not only beautiful as it will be certainly fast and with a contained price: a great combination ;-)

Yacht Boat Plans | THE 2015 MINI TRANSAT HAS STARTED

Yacht Boat Plans

Thats a great race (84 racers) and I will be following it here. The weather this year will be very particular and strategy regarding routing (no outside help) will count for much. In 2 days they will get some nasty weather and after that several routing options are possible. Here is the tracker:
http://www.minitransat-ilesdeguadeloupe.fr/cartographie?lang=en

Remember that there are two classes, the proto and the boats that are produced (Serie). on the proto
Frederic Denis is already well ahead of the pack on this boat (proto):
Quite a surprise since he is not a top gun and the boat (designed by Marc Lombard) is not new, having made the 2012 race with Antoine Rioux and in 2013 with Gahinet. The boat had problems and Gahinet was recovered by fishermen. Later the boat was extensively recovered for the new owner and this race.

On the serie Benoit Hantzperg is leading but with lots of boats very near. This guy on a brand new Pogo 3:
Not also among the favorites...but it is a long race (4000nm) and it is just beginning.
Here the main site and this year in English too: http://www.minitransat-ilesdeguadeloupe.fr/?lang=en

Boat Plans Aluminium | COMET CAT 50

Boat Plans Aluminium

Initially Comar announced as first cats on his new cat line  a 37 and a 62:
http://interestingsailboats.blogspot.pt/2014/04/comet-and-cats-37-and-62.html. The 62 is still on the agenda, the 37 is almost on the water but the next to follow will be a 50 that Comar describes as an Oceanic sailboat:

"The Comet 50 and Cat was developed with the intention of making a fast oceanic high performance comfortable. The project still in the preliminary stage has the ambition to become a point of reference for all fans of catamarans that aim to travel the world in safety and comfort with daily averages impossible to a monohull or heavy catamaran with relative small sail areas...The boat will be built in composite with extensive use of carbon on the most stressed areas."

The design is from Marc Lombard and the cat 50 will weight only 11000kg. It will have a lot of stability due to a large beam (7.30m) and low CG, will have long dagerboards (2,45m draft) that are not visible on the drawings (rotating ones?).
It will be a very fast sailboat, able to carry a lot of sail: Mainsail 87.3m2, Genoa 130% 55m2, code zero 115m2, Spy asymmetric 160m2. The tankage will be considerable (600L of water 360L of diesel) and it will have two powerful 60hp engines. It looks nice to me, lets hope the price is a nice one too ;-)
