I re-designed the foil with a bigger bulb, so that the socket could be 25mm deep. The bulb looks a bit fat, but in theory it should work. I wish I could use CFD to sort this out propperly, but bloody ANSYS are too on top of their licensing.

anyway that can get cut out tomorrow, if anyone has any comments about the shape please let me know before then!

deck goes on tonight hopefully. making pretty good ground, a good 1/3rd of the list is ticked off.

We finally have had a break in the weather, as you would well know, so off we went on Australia Day to launch our Mushulu 14. The weather was fine, but with the wind gusting to around 20 knots, it wasn’t all smooth motoring, as you could imagine. The boat hit the water and guess what ? No leaks ! So I must have done something right.

So I did a couple of runs up and down so Sue could get some shots with the camera and then we put in all the fishing gear and stuff and off we went.

The boat handled the 2ft chop with ease and the 30hp Mercury was more than enough power for that boat. Also we didn’t seem to get wet at all, must be the shape of the hull I suppose that seems to spray the water out and not up, so that was good.

????

There was more than enough room for the 2 of us, with 4 rods/ 2 tackle boxes/ esky and associated gear. We didnt really need to use the hatches at all in the seats except when we caught those few giant bucks , they only just fitted in thank goodness. Lucky, because they wouldn’t have fitted into the esky with all of the other fish that we caught. Naturally we had a couple of cold ones to celebrate the launching, with a lot of great comments from people at the ramp about the boat.

What a great design !

Boat Blind Plans | SWAN IS BACK Swan 50 club

Swan has once produced the more prestigious, fast and well designed cruiser racers but on the last years has only produced well designed performance luxury boats that lacked the distinctive character that was the brand trademark and that have make them different from the others. 

Even the more racing oriented 42 and 45 lack the comparative modernity and performance of older models... but not this boat.
I believe that with this one they have returned to their origins: that will be a very expensive high tech boat but not a luxurious one. They traded luxury for performance and have it designed by Juan K the one that had designed the fastest VOR racers.

The Swan 50 look gorgeous to me and even if they present it, in what regards cruising, as fit for "comfortable short cruises or longer sport cruises" I would say that would satisfy a performance cruiser that tend to be more spartan then the habitual Swan clientele that is more luxury oriented.

It has a good storage, good tankage (500L of water and 300L of diesel for a 56KW engine) and only the galley seems small. Being the boat a semi-custom one that would not be difficult to modify since it is adjacent to a storage space. More 60cm to the galley (and less 60cm on the storage) it would make it adequate for longer cruising.

Of course, it is a carbon boat and not only the looks and design look great and very effective, specially for ocean racing (or cruising), as the dimensions point to a very, very fast sailboat that will be a lot of fun to sail. This 50ft has about the weight of a performance 42ft  cruiser (8500kg), a moderated beam all pulled back (4.20m), a big draft (3.20m) with an option for a swallow draft (2.20m) and certainly a big B/D ratio that in conjunction with the beam and the chines will make for a huge stability, that we can imagine looking for the sail it can carry upwind: 142m2.

In what regards hull design nothing really new, just a very updated design with an inverted bow, chines forward to create more buoyancy and to divert the water making for a drier boat, chines on the back to increase stability and making it easier to drive downwind and two rudders for a better and more efficient control on ocean conditions or downwind........ What a boat!!!   ;-)

I have to say that never understood very well why X yachts have launched the XC series with the characteristic they have: Middle weight, very classical in design. Dont take me wrong, the XC series are great boats but I never understood why that type of boat would be the vision X yacht had of  a cruising boat. Maybe they just wanted to compete on the Halberg Rassy more traditional market and if it was all about that, no doubt that they accomplished the task.

But personally I would have took without any hesitation for cruising a boat from the XP line  over one of the XC. Sure, the XC has a better interior for cruising but all that weight does not make my style. I like rewarding boats to sail, even if I would like a Xp with a better cruising interior, not that the XP line has a bad one, but it is not a match for the cruising interior of the XC series.

Well it seems I am not the only one since X yacht launched a new series for me :-) and all that share my tastes, simply the X series. They describe the new line, referring to the first boat on the line, the X6 (the X4 is made according the same principles) like this:

Developed to provide ultimate luxury, without sacrificing the renowned X-Yachts sailing performance, the X6 will take her owners and crew anywhere in sumptuous style and comfort...

Well, it makes sense to me ;-) The X4 will be a bit heavier than the XP series, but nothing like the XC. The new 41ft will weight 8850kg with a big B/D ratio (42.9%) for a boat with a standard draft of 2.20m and a torpedo keel. It will have a considerable beam of 3.95m (not beamy by modern standards) and that will give it a huge stability.

A L keel can also be provided, with a draft of 1.85m (and more ballast) or with the same ballast and 2.5m of draft (to compensate the less efficient keel design).

It will come with a 45hp engine, 97m2 of sail upwind, a tankage of 200L of diesel and 340L of water. First boats will be delivered next summer. I like it...maybe because it is very similar to my boat, that is just a bit less beamy and a bit lighter. My kind of cruisers ;-)

Boat Blind Plans | Sailing with the new tramps

The deserted rigging lawn at DPSS, a glamour winters day in Queensland. The boat has been on the water half a dozen times now, and looking fairly promising, though lining up against other moths has proved tricky.

A large part of this project has been designing and building the aerodynamic tramps for the boat. They are shaped quite carefully to maintain attached airflow around the lower surface when sailing upwind. The tramps are supposed to generate lift downward and to leeward, with a slight forward component, reducing drag and possibly even contributing to the driving force. Despite being complicated, heavy and generally troublesome, I like them. A few people have suggested that, as an alternative, i could have built the wings as rigid carbon structures, and I think there is merit in that idea. I went down this path because:

• I wanted the option to disassemble and pack up the wings for transport
• I didnt want to have to make all that tooling
• I was happy in this instance to base the design on a tried and true structure

At this point I should thank Yancy Smith at Doyle Sails Queensland for teaching me everything I now know about sailmaking, letting me stay at his house, use his sewing machine / loft etc. I spent some time trying to work off my debt doing sail repairs, so if yours was the luff tape I sewed on or the batten pocket I fixed etc, I apologise in advance for the sketchy workmanship. Totally out of character for an otherwise high performing loft.

With access to the sail plotter, I had the chance to experiment with ways of unwrapping / flattening the panels from the rhino model. Once in 2d, You can throw in the seam allowances and number the panels ready for plotting and cutting. I think it was the first time Yancy had done that with the plotter, and hopefully in the future it will streamline the process of making boat covers, bags, logos etc. Once everything was cut out, it was just a simple process of sticking it all up and sewing it together! A week later, I had the first set of tramps that everyone has seen already.

We initially went for a Technora laminate for both the top and bottom skins, with a luff pocket made of black luff sleeve material. As it became clear that fitting the bottom skin was going to be a challenge, I sewed it all together with just the top skin and went sailing. The Technora looked great, but had a couple of major flaws- it was slippery - soon overcome by adding taffeta film, and it was too stiff meaning that the few wrinkles from the luff pocket couldnt be pulled out. In the end though, it was the point loading near the seams that brought it undone, and it started falling apart after a couple of sails and one return trip on the highway.

I went back up to Yancys and unpicked it all, replacing the top panel with some heavy black Dacron. We worked out how to tension the bottom skin to the bolt rope track, and it all went back together. The Dacron on top looked much tighter, (but obviously wasnt due to the extra stretch, the Technora had a great rigid feel despite being a bit wrinkly) and the sail shape in the bottom is 80% there.

Ive been sailing twice now with the full wing tramps, and it generally feels nice and clean. Definitely reduced air noise around the boat, though reaching and running youd struggle to see a speed difference, possibly due to the extra couple of kilos in the tramps alone. Upwind though I think I have managed to get the flow to hook up a couple of times, and she feels like a rocket. I havent really lined up against anyone whos super fast yet though, (no offence Rob!) so probably too early to make a call.

Practically, our efforts to get water to drain, tension to remain and things to be generally durable seem to be paying off, with the lower skin being hardly noticeable when sailing. I cant feel any real difference when righting from a capsize etc, though havent been out in anything more than 10 knots and flat water. Its a fun experiment.

Well, not much, only images but as they say "images are worth more than a thousand words" and through them we can see a very modern sailboat, kind of a cruiser on a 36ft solo open racer hull, a bit as it was already with the 10.50, but the hull is more modern now with chines, a huge form stability and designed to sail with little heel.

The boat looks even better than on the model I had posted the photo and we have now a look at the interior, that seems to have doors :-) What we can see a modern interior not very different from the one of the 10.50 but with a lot more light, coming from those frontal "windows", that will allow a good forward view, and from bigger port hulls.

The saloon is probably smaller since the boat has now 3 cabins and the head is now between the front cabin and the saloon. An interesting detail allows the galley to be bigger, with the use of a bench aft the saloon table.

It seems a worse distribution than on the previous model since a storage space will be needed anyway. Regarding that, the front cabin can be transformed on a storage space. Better to fly a spinnaker but worse in what regards cruising. The design is from Finot/Conq that just used the same type of frontal "windows" used first by Valer on the JPK 10.80

While waiting the first one to be built the shipyard posted a very interesting virtual visit that really can give an idea of the boat interior volume. Looking at it I wonder that can be a very satisfactory space for a single guy to live aboard, on a boat that is rock solid, can sail and moor in very swallow waters (where places to moor can still be found) and offers as a plus a satisfactory sailing performance. It can actually pay himself substituting a  rented home and offer a sailboat as a bonus ;-).

G’day to all and welcome,

I am new to “blogging”, so this may take some time to start running properly.

Our new blog is replacing the “Latest News” section within our website. With so many build updates coming through, along with “New Designs Coming” and other such projects, our latest news blog is a great way to keep the world informed about what we and our clients are doing in reagards to building their boats and launchings.

I guess that we have been lucky that so many people are prepared to dig deep in our website to look for what is new and we are thankful to all of you for doing that to keep yourselves informed about our activities.

This blog has been on our desk for nearly 6 months, but with so much happening, it just kept getting pushed back. So, with 2011 now upon us, we decided to take the plunge and get this up and running.

So, from now on, we intend to post on our “Latest News Blog”, any news of our designs and happenings, as well as anything else that may be of interest to our followers and supporters.

Since getting into strip plank composite designs, weve had so many enquirys on
"How do you strip plank?"

The general perception out there is that it looks very complicated, especially for the first time builder. 

Well actually, its very, very easy!

Many of our clients have never built a boat before and using our method, are flying through their builds.

It was around 4 months ago that we decided to make these videos. One night whilst strip planking, I asked Debbie to grab the camera and said

"Lets have some fun and make a strip planking video. No rehersing or practice runs...just hit play and lets make it up as we go along."

So Debbie grabbed the camera, hit play and off we went. Crikey, I didnt know what I was going to say from one minute to the next !!

Well, after posting them on our forum, they were an outstanding success with many commenting how great they are and also how easy the process looks.  Sure theyre rough around the edges, but many have sinced used our build process after watching the videos a few times and then going out and duplicating the technique on their boats... with top results. Weve even got a few professional boatbuilders using our technique, whilst building our designs and commenting on just how easy it is!

No doubt, some of you have visited our Boatbuilding forum and not found the videos.
This is because the videos are only available to Members Only and not the general public. By joining our forum, you get full access to a greater range of topics and also access to these videos.

Hi Mark,

I put the final undercoat this morning tomorrow I will guide coat and bring it down to 240 grit and give the underside a top coat then I will flip it .

Apart from 8 wild bees playing havoc and sticking to the wet paint I think it will come up OK.

So far I have used 43 – 45 Litres of resin approximately 36 litres in the lay up and 7 – 8 litres in the bog.

In the layup I am using 420 – 430 gramms of resin per square metre of 456 gramm double bias matt.
