If you are thinking in buying a Halberg Rassy, have a good look at this one. It is not properly cheaper but it is a superior boat in many counts if not in all. This is not the racer (XP line) but an heavier stronger cruiser and a boat with an astonishing sail performance, giving its weight. If you dont believe me go to the results of the last editions of the ARC and you will find these comfortable heavy cruisers among the fastest boats of their size, among cruiser-racers.
I have already posted about the XC45 MKII: http://interestingsailboats.blogspot.gr/2014/11/xc-45-mkii.html
The sail test is by Toby Hodges from Yachting world...and his opinion is not very different from mine ;-)

Swan has once produced the more prestigious, fast and well designed cruiser racers but on the last years has only produced well designed performance luxury boats that lacked the distinctive character that was the brand trademark and that have make them different from the others.
Even the more racing oriented 42 and 45 lack the comparative modernity and performance of older models... but not this boat. I believe that with this one they have returned to their origins: that will be a very expensive high tech boat but not a luxurious one. They traded luxury for performance and have it designed by Juan K the one that had designed the fastest VOR racers.
The Swan 50 look gorgeous to me and even if they present it, in what regards cruising, as fit for "comfortable short cruises or longer sport cruises" I would say that would satisfy a performance cruiser that tend to be more spartan then the habitual Swan clientele that is more luxury oriented.
It has a good storage, good tankage (500L of water and 300L of diesel for a 56KW engine) and only the galley seems small. Being the boat a semi-custom one that would not be difficult to modify since it is adjacent to a storage space. More 60cm to the galley (and less 60cm on the storage) it would make it adequate for longer cruising.
Of course, it is a carbon boat and not only the looks and design look great and very effective, specially for ocean racing (or cruising), as the dimensions point to a very, very fast sailboat that will be a lot of fun to sail. This 50ft has about the weight of a performance 42ft cruiser (8500kg), a moderated beam all pulled back (4.20m), a big draft (3.20m) with an option for a swallow draft (2.20m) and certainly a big B/D ratio that in conjunction with the beam and the chines will make for a huge stability, that we can imagine looking for the sail it can carry upwind: 142m2.
In what regards hull design nothing really new, just a very updated design with an inverted bow, chines forward to create more buoyancy and to divert the water making for a drier boat, chines on the back to increase stability and making it easier to drive downwind and two rudders for a better and more efficient control on ocean conditions or downwind........ What a boat!!! ;-)

It starts at 13.00, 31 December, a good way to start the year :-) a non stop circumnavigation race for duos on IMOCA racers (Open 60s). Unfortunately not many teams, only 8 and not all top teams. The good news is that Spaniards are really on the short crew/solo racing. Half of the teams are Spanish and that is a first: a duo circumnavigation race that has not a majority of French teams!!! Not yet favorites, but as Alex Pella showed on the Route du Rhum, it is a question of time.
The favorites are the usual, even if many top sailors are not racing this one. They are two: Stam/Le Cam and Alex/Ribes with an outsider on his first big circumnavigation race, Riechers, here teaming with Audigane. No favorites among the Spanish? I dont believe so...well, if Pella was on Neutragena maybe an outsider but it is Altadill that is the skipper, teaming with Muñoz. Great sailor but more of a team player than a solo/duo sailor, but maybe he proves me wrong.

Lets compare dimensions and try to understand how different will the new boat be versus the old one. First dimensions for the 10.50, all the measures in m, t, m2.
So what does this tell us? It tells that it is a more powerful and faster boat: Slightly bigger, more beam and more draft probably for an identical ballast, or slightly bigger. Also the chines will increase boat stiffness and will contribute to the bigger power. That extra power has a reflex on the sail area the boat can carry, about more 5%.
Regarding hull design thats the biggest difference and a remarkable one since the boat looks different viewed from behind and at the bow. Very curious the bow and the forward sections, designed to create lift and to drive the spray away. It is amazing the difference that some few years can make on cutting edge boat design. I have no doubt this boat will be a rocket and I am very curious regarding the first test sails. I bet that before the first boat hits the water they will have at least 10 sold LOL.

I have to say I was not surprised with its victory oven the much acclaimed Garcia 45.: The Boreal looks so much nicer and well balanced that I bet it sails better. They promote it as an exploration boat but I dont see it that way: I see it as a boat that will suit those that want to voyage long or live permanently aboard the boat in any latitude. A very practical and strong one, not properly fast but not slow either, with a cutter rig, for increased safety and lots of storage. Given the quality of the boat and size the 685 000 euros it costs dont seem exaggerated to me. Yacht.de had tested the boat and made a nice video that you can see here: http://i804.photobucket.com/albums/yy322/Paulo_Carvalho/725308_zpsudl15tyb.jpg
Yachting World has also tested it and Matthew Sheahan concludes this way:
"There cannot be many brochures that describe a boats accommodation as having a desk in every cabin where bluewater children can do their homework. But this is just one of many examples of what this boat is all about: live aboard, go anywhere. Solidly built above and below decks, the Boréal 52 is the concept of a designer with many miles at sea sailing with a family. While the chined alloy hull wont appeal to everyone, the rugged style will instil confidence in many. As for performance, at 18 tonnes she was surprisingly nimble, even in the light airs of our test, and was a very easy boat to handle with well thought-out control line runs.
The Boreal 52 brings home what a real deepwater cruiser needs to be like. A go-anywhere boat, with a lifting keel, that is full of clever and innovative details, especially the doghouse-navstation that is based on the experience of many hard-fought miles. All this for a custom-built boat with a price tag that is still considerably less than some popular alternatives even when youve added all the listed options. Impressed." What can I say more? I like it and it seems to me close to perfect for living aboard permanently. Maybe I would have liked it a bit prettier but I am a hard man to satisfy. Anyway it looks a lot better then the Garcia 45 and better then the Boreal 44 (being longer helps it a lot).

While we wait for the Mini-Transat to re-start (all have already arrived to Lanzarote) lets have a look at the Transat Jacques Vabre, a 22 year old race that this year will have the additional interest of seeing the comparative performance of the new Open 60s on foils with the older ones. The Jacques Vabre is a global duo race meaning that even if we have different classifications we will also be able to see the comparative performance between maxi trimarans, 50ft trimarans, Open 60s and 40class racers. Several races in one.
The race starts this month in France (Le Havre) and finishes in Brazil (Itajaí), a long Transat. 42 boats have already signed up, the majority Open 60s (20). a race to follow for sure, not only very interesting as with a site in English and Portuguese too (besides French): http://www.transat-jacques-vabre.com/en Some movies about the race and the racers:

http://interestingsailboats.blogspot.pt/2014/10/solaris-50.html and I had said only nice things about it but now I have seen the boat in Dusseldorf and I was greatly impressed. This is not only a very beautiful boat but also the kind of boat that I would have if I won the lottery.
And for the quality I ended up not finding it extravagantly expensive at 570000 euros, VAT included, lot less then what would cost an Halberg Rassy 48 with a similar built quality.
On the link above you can check out what I had said about the boat dimensions but I will add that with a beam of 4.55m is significantly narrower then most production main market boats (Sense 50-4.86m; Hanse 505-4.75m; Sun Odyssey 509-4.69m; Bavaria cruiser 51-4.67m), has a bigger B/D ratio, a more efficient keel and a considerably bigger draft (or in option a smaller draft and an even bigger B/D ratio). This extra keel efficiency and superior B/D ratio will give not only a more powerful boat but also one with a better reserve stability.
The 14 200kg of weight are very similar to the one of the above main market cruisers even considering that this weight, contrary to the others is not an empty weight but but the one of a boat in sailing condition with half tankage. So it is not a particularly light boat but consider that contrary to the others this is a vacuum infused cored boat (Airex) using vynilester-epoxy resins with carbon reinforcements and one that can have carbon spars. Knowing that they have 40 years of experience building boats that means that this boat is overbuilt and all that extra weight is aimed to increase boat strength. They not only use bulkheads laminated to the deck and hull as they use composite cored laminates on the two main bulkheads to diminish dilatation problems between two different materials. The idea is to built a kind of monoblock boat increasing overall stiffness.
If someone wants to know more here there is a detailed specification: http://www.messink.nl/pdf/Specs%20SOLARIS_50_EN_SS_0714.pdf
Many looking at this boat would say: Another pretty fragile boat designed for med sailing. Well, fragile it is not and a boat doesnt have to be ugly to be very seaworthy and strong and Solaris is a paradigma regarding that. Besides the winch position, the self tacking jib and mainsheet system (that can have a traveler or not) everything is designed taking into account solo or short crew sailing.
A word regarding handholds that were almost absent on the 50ft at Dusseldorf: They are mounted to the owner request. You can see that on the Solaris 58 that is side by side with the 50. There are handrails on the deck while the 50 has none. Those steel handrails can also be mounted on the interior ceiling also.
The sprayhood is very interesting: it can be stowed and completely covered on a space provided for that on the cabin or deployed and... surprise surprise, it is an huge one that forms a completely covered enclosure. I would like to have seen that, as well as how it fits on the storage space and how much time it takes to deploy but they did not have it at Dusseldorf.
Finally in what regards storage this boat is one of the few 50ft that offers a garage with enough space for a small dinghy and a forward sail locker/storage space with considerable dimensions. On long range cruising, while crossing oceans the dinghy can be deflated and the extra garage space can be used for extra storage.

First of all a word of thanks to the ones that have sent me personal messages asking if I had some problem and when the blog would be continued. It will be continued in October since I am sailing and with no time for it right now, except that I had a problem on the saildrive of my boat and while I am at Corfu waiting for it to be fixed, I will have some time available. So in between some posts and the first one about a favorite, the Solaris 50.
I had already talked about this boat that impressed me on the last Dusseldorf boat show and I had posted already about it: http://interestingsailboats.blogspot.it/2015/03/solaris-50-i-love-it.html
I will not repeat myself regarding the above post just will post some new pictures and refer what Yachting World and Toby Hodges (that tested the boat) say about it:
"This new 50-footer follows the fiendishly cool Solaris 58, which launched in early 2014 including the pièce-de-resistance dreadnought bow and subtle aft chines. But, at nearly half the price of her larger sister, the Solaris 50 should prove a popular choice.
As the latest Acebal-designed range of Solaris yachts become increasingly sleeker, one thing hasnt changed: their build quality remains top-drawer.
Javier Soto Acebal has drawn a hull that promises strong performance with a soft motion. It will have an integrated bowsprit for flying Code 0s and gennakers, and a self-tacking jib as standard for easy short-handed sailing.
Stowage has been well-considered throughout. The large sail locker can be converted to a crew cabin and a longitudinal garage will facilitate the launch and recovery of a tender. There is dedicated liferaft stowage and a wet-hanging locker inside, with drip tray and drainage."
On the video talking about how it sails Toby says "Fantastic", regarding the boat "the sexiest 50 ft around" with a "smartly finished interior" "built and finished very well". I would say a cruising boat for the ones that really like sailing as much as cruising and also for the ones for whom beauty is an important matter in a sailingboat.
Just a final word about something you dont see but it is there: First the cockpit table, hidden under the cockpit floor, very easy to deploy and the Spray-hood also completely hidden and also easy to rise or store away. Another thing you dont see is the price that I would say it is surprisingly low at 480 000 euros, much less than what would cost a Halberg Rassy that I would say has a similar quality. Maybe thats one of the reasons why they have already sold several of these beauties.

Initially Comar announced as first cats on his new cat line a 37 and a 62: http://interestingsailboats.blogspot.pt/2014/04/comet-and-cats-37-and-62.html. The 62 is still on the agenda, the 37 is almost on the water but the next to follow will be a 50 that Comar describes as an Oceanic sailboat:
"The Comet 50 and Cat was developed with the intention of making a fast oceanic high performance comfortable. The project still in the preliminary stage has the ambition to become a point of reference for all fans of catamarans that aim to travel the world in safety and comfort with daily averages impossible to a monohull or heavy catamaran with relative small sail areas...The boat will be built in composite with extensive use of carbon on the most stressed areas."
The design is from Marc Lombard and the cat 50 will weight only 11000kg. It will have a lot of stability due to a large beam (7.30m) and low CG, will have long dagerboards (2,45m draft) that are not visible on the drawings (rotating ones?). It will be a very fast sailboat, able to carry a lot of sail: Mainsail 87.3m2, Genoa 130% 55m2, code zero 115m2, Spy asymmetric 160m2. The tankage will be considerable (600L of water 360L of diesel) and it will have two powerful 60hp engines. It looks nice to me, lets hope the price is a nice one too ;-)
