Boat Plans Uk | hull

Boat Plans Uk

Finally the hull is faired and undercoated. wings are re-built, new foil is curing. tramps are re-done. lots of fiddly jobs but the boat is looking a lot closer to hitting the water. Im optimistic as always - well see if we can go for a sail this weekend. its not getting a top coat because i cant be bothered fairing the hull right now. done enough sanding lately.

I think the renovation has shaved about 7.5 or 8 kilos off the boat - hull down to 12.5 or so, lost 0.5kg from the wings too at least. anyway it looks strong enough, looks good enough. hope it works.

Wooden Boat Plans And Kits | GLOBAL OCEAN RACE 2015 2016

Wooden Boat Plans And Kits

Maybe it is this year that this race gets the number of entries to make it a major one on the offshore solo/short crew racing scene. The idea is just great and it became even better: An affordable racing 40class boat for all, solo or duo crews and a circumnavigation race. Better because now, instead of multiple legs it is a circumnavigation with a single stop in Auckland. More interesting as a sporting event and also less expensive and less time consuming for the participants.
The 30 000nm race will start from Southampton in September 2015 and will finish in Portsmouth around March 2016. There are already 8 teams in and I am impressed with the American Dave Rearick that will race a Kiwi 40FC Class40. He is doing right now a solo circumnavigation on that boat....just for training for the big one LOL. Meet the guy, quite a character and ....not a young guy anymore. Cheers to him.

I am quite sure this is a great race, at least for the ones that are racing it...most of them have made more than one edition and keep coming back. This race has the potential to become a classic and I really hope that to happen: A non French major solo race, that would be interesting and would help to spread the concept of solo/short crew long range racing among other countries.

Kayak Boat Plans | Finishing the hull Part 6

Kayak Boat Plans

Just a quick post to show how the hull went together, and note a couple of tricks I picked up in the process. On the whole, the parts from the CNC tools fitted together really well. I thought at one stage there was some sort of error with the front wingbar socket location, but it turned out to be human error. I wasnt careful enough in aligning the two sections of the mould when I joined them. Lesson: dont leve any small detail at all up to the human! The sides and foredeck were designed to just glue to the hull, (they only fitted in one spot so it was impossible to get that wrong) but the deck needed to be glued in and then the joints reinforced with carbon tapes.

After Half-meanies disastrous tapes, I decided to try spray gluing the dry carbon to the joints and wetting out with resin afterward. I used a product called Infuzene, which is designed for temporarily holding the laminate together in an infusion process. It worked pretty well, but ended up coming un-stuck in some places where the resin wet it out. Some people suggested just 3M spray glue, which I might try at some point. The final bond of the tape to the hull seemed ok in the end - Infuzene is designed to be a bit lumpy so as not to coat the entire surface of the cloth - time will tell if ive completely stuffed it up.

I took the boat outside for a tidy up, and wetndried the whole thing ready for clear coat. The surface isnt going to be perfect - the odd pin hole, dent, seam etc. but I just couldnt be bothered fairing it at this point! it looks fine generally by my standards. The foils will be a different story of course.

Dry tapes stuck down with spray glue

Infuzene spray - the pink blotchy stuff

Boat Designs And Plans | new stuf hull wings etc

Boat Designs And Plans

so ive been neglecting this for a while, mainly due to another architecure folio.
been sailing a few times, but mainly been in front of the computer evolving into one of those hunched, pale, widescreen-format-eyed little creatures (from the future).

anyway the whole time i was studying i was sidetracked with a stack of new ideas for a moth, and im pretty sure ill be building something over the summer "break". The lines are from Doug Culnanes Lord Flasheart, designed in collaboration with Adam May. (cheers doug, looks great)

Flasheart is available for home builders like myself to have a crack at, so in the interests of total tansparency ill be chucking everything up here form design to eventual completion. that puts the pressure on to not fuck it up i suppose.

construction will hopefully be by female mould, cut from high density foam using a 3d router. dont know how much that will cost yet, but the plan B is a hot wire and ply plug. the boat will be built in 2 halves, vacuum moulded etc etc. the aim is to keep construction extra simple and quick so that the thing isnt still half finished in a year or 2. kinda defeats the purpose. 10kg for the hull will be acceptable, but i will of course be going for lighter. as this is my first go i want to make sure it holds together.

what the wind sees

there are a couple of odd ideas in this. this is only the first iteration, i might do a few versions with different configurations to get a feel for what will work best, be lightest and cheapest. Id love some feedback on what you think will work and what wont. at this stage i think its better to get a bit of consensus on things. The main decisions ive made with this one:

  • Foredeck, wavepiercing bow - The stem is even shorter than Flasheart, which is on the short side as it is. im hoping that the bow in this configuration will go further underwater without digging in, and use the buoyancy around the mast base to pop back up. i find that most of my stacks at the moment are due to the drag of the foredeck, tramps and ropes stopping the boat, rather than the pitch.
  • Kingpost, Recessed foil wingbars - The foil shapes are mainly there to reduce fricion when the hull does go under a wave, though they should reduce windage a bit too. circles are terrible in terms of drag and im avoiding them as much as i can. The kingpost is cantillevered from the keel, so there is no need for a forward support, that adds areodynamic and hydrodynamic drag. ill make a bladder mould for the kingpost, so i can cantrol the fibre orientation and reinforcement.
  • Wings - Raised up and out of the way of everything. the freeboard is slightly lower than flasheart aft, (50mm) the wings are slightly higher. They are airfol shaped, only because i think it would actually reduce drag a bit. it opens up a big gap between the tramp and hull which will reduce windage.
  • Flare - I altered the bow of Flasheart a bit to include a 10 - 15mm deep step. for lift.
  • Centreboard is 100mm further forward that Doug had it - his was in the same place as my current boat, on which mast is 200mm further aft. what is a standard dimension these days from transom to front of centreboard case? assuming 8 degree strut rake.
  • the outside wing bar continues aft of the back wing bar. the joint is easier, and you reduce tramp area, while still having somewhere to sit. and if i find the back bar is too far forward, i dont have to buy new outer bars.
  • There is only one internal bulkhead at the centreboard case, which is pretty small. (divides in 2 as per rules) some diagonal reinforcing will be built into the hull laminate.

anyway the only things i am sure about at this stage are the general freeboard, and the step in the chine.. foredeck could come up, aft deck could be convex (better for 3d router). wings could atach to the hull (i feel it may be better to have something solid to stand on, rather than just tramp, though this means reinforcing the deck a bit?)

anyway ill keep plugging away, please email me if you have any ideas

Boat Trailer Plans Australia | THIS OLD HULL NEEDED A REPAIR

Boat Trailer Plans Australia

Well, boats dont last forever and once fast old hulls become slow and in need of repair, so do people and in this case the "old hull" needing a repair was my skeleton. It is repaired now with a brand new hip prosthesis. All is well I am burning the recovery time to be able to sail my boat next season, but it is painful and no much will to post. Thats the reason things have been slow here and will continue that way for some time.

Fair winds to all,

Paulo
