Boat Plans For A Chesapeake Deadrise | WILD OATS WON THE SYDNEY HOBART

Boat Plans For A Chesapeake Deadrise

For the 8th time and that is just incredible on these days were boat design evolves so quickly. That can only be explained by the very particular conditions that we find on this race that, contrary to most sea and wind conditions, favors narrow hulls and as we know that recent design hull developments favor beamier hulls. Also the use of the recent foil technology to increase dynamically righting moment (DSS) allowed just the bit extra performance to this already old hull to continue to be the fastest on this race on these conditions,
Comanche lost the race when he meat confused seas and light winds were the difference in speed for Wild Oats can be huge. Comanche, had found on the final part of the race stronger downwind winds and calm seas and started an impressive recovery but not in time to catch Wild Oats.

Regarding the rest of the fleet we assisted to several boats giving up with problems, among them some of the favorites, Giacomo with a broken mast, Perpetual Loyal making water after having hit something and a favorite of mine, Last Tango, the Salona 44 with bad luck having to head for port with a crew member with problems on his back and damaging the sails while trying to get back to the race. Other boats are making a great race too and I confess that besides the ones that win on real time I like to have a look at the smaller boats doing a great race and thats the case with Chutzpah, a Caprice 40 (Rachel&Pugh), Patrice, a Ker 46 (Ker), Simply Fun, a Chinese made HH42 (Judel&Vrolijk), Midnight Rumbler, a Ker 40 (Ker), Cadiparra 8 an older Jones 42 (Jones), After Midnight, a modified Farr 40 and the first "cheap" boat, Ariel, a First 40, all of them surrounded by much bigger boats.

Boat Plans Wood | CIRCUMNAVIGATING ON A SMALL BOAT MAXUS 22

Boat Plans Wood

I knew about this attempt much before it started. Tomasz, a Polish follower of this blog, called my attention to it in April...but I have hesitated to post about it. I was afraid that could come as an endorsement of this type of adventures. Sure, I have posted about crazy adventures like sailing the Atlantic on a traditional Indian small boat or circumnavigating on an open beach cat, but this one is made on a mass production protected waters boat and the ones that sail it make statements like this:

"Ten hours later I was sitting at the helm during his watch, and the anemometer showed up to 50 knots true wind. The established wind was not less than 45 knots. F..In the air, rain and water spray limited the visibility to 20 meters. Brave Puffin under  foresail went full against the wind making 3.5 to 5 knots, accelerating strongly after  passing the wave crest....We still have a smaller and smallest storm jib ... If anyone says that small boats do not have any advantages in a storm that is to say that he lacks experience ...sailing in small boats. Not saying that every small sailboat is good to sail on this conditions. Also not saying that every large yacht is suited to the task. Capable yachts are properly prepared, and the size has nothing to do with it."

That I dont subscribe and that may create illusory expectations on the ones that will think that a production boat like the Maxus 22 is as suited for the task as a bigger production boat designed for offshore work and I say so because they talk about " adaptation of the serial design...for ocean sailing" but never say what were those adaptations and give the dimensions of a standard boat :" Maxus 22 was designed by Jack Dashkievich. We make them from 2013 with both interior and exterior ballast. The entire construction is done in our yard in W?gorzewo. We have yachts sailing in Poland, Germany, France, Russia, Denmark and Sweden. Specifications: hull length: 6.36 m, beam: 2.48 m interior height: 1.60 / 1.73 m sail area: 23 m2."
http://www.northman.pl/eng_maxus-solo-around-o-projekcie.htm

This gives the very wrong idea they are doing it on almost standard boat with some few modifications and in fact, at first, I assumed that it was true and they were crazy sailors trying an irresponsible attempt, but after all it is not a boat close to a standard Maxus 22 but a highly modified one with a reinforced hull and a beefed up rig. We cannot find that information on the page of Maxus yachts but we can find it here.
http://www.zewoceanu.pl/Maxus-Solo-Around/Jacht---Maxus-22

But not even here can we find nothing regarding what I saw on the photos: A boat with a much bigger ballast than on the standard boats and a bulbed keel. That implies not only a reinforced hull but a boat structurally reinforced, in other words, a completely different boat and a much more expensive one.

The Maxus 22, on its most interesting version the QR is a boat that weights 1200kg and has 250kg of ballast on a non bulbed lifting keel. Nothing to do with the ballast or the keel of the Puffin, the "Max 22" that is circumnavigating. The shipyard, not making all this clear, induces in error future clients that will think that the Maxus 22, even in its fixed keel version (the less popular) is more than a boat for sheltered or semi-sheltered waters, a boat with offshore potential and that is not only untrue but dangerous. Not saying that the Maxus 22 and the other Maxus yachts are not interesting boats, quite the contrary, just saying that they were not designed, or RCD approved, for offshore work and that the publicity they make regarding a Max22 circumnavigating is a misleading one.

They talk a lot about a low budget project but modifying extensively a  Maxus 22 for doing this will be more expensive than to buy  a Django 6.70 or 7.20, boats that  were developed from the mini racer concept and have already an offshore potential on their standard versions. It is low budget because Maxus had done the job for them for free in exchange for publicity revenues ;-)

Saying all this, it is an interesting performance and the sailors that are attempting it are experienced ones, with an adventurous mind: Simon Kuczynski, a sailing instructor with 25000nm and Dobrochna Nowak also a  sailing instructor that crossed the Atlantic twice, one of them on a 5m sailboat.
They have already sailed till Canary Islands and are waiting a good weather to cross the Atlantic. You can follow their adventures here:
http://www.northman.pl/maxus-solo-around.htm
http://www.zewoceanu.pl/Aktualna-pozycja/

And have also a look at the Maxus 22 that, without pretending to be an offshore boat, is a  nice trailerable inexpensive weekend cruiser for semi-protected waters, one where the weight of the crew and form stability has a significant role on boat stability. Or saying in other way, a boat that sails well but will not recover easily from a knock-down, if it recovers at all. Nothing wrong with that given the waters the boat is designed to sail on.

Canoe Boat Plans | GARCIA EXPLORATION 45 VERSUS COMET EXPLORER 46

Canoe Boat Plans

Two boats pointed to the same type of sailors but two very different boats even if sharing a kind of similar look. The Garcia is an aluminium centerboarder with almost all the ballast inside the boat, the Comet is a swing keel boat with all ballast on the keel. Both have a cutter rig.

This gives Garcia an advantage in what regards simplicity and  Comet a clear advantage in what regards performance: For the same RM the Comet will only need a percentage of the ballast that will be needed on the Garcia.

The Garcia is almost integrally built in Aluminium, the Comet is made of vinylester resins, Eglass and kevlar and carbon reinforcements, using an infusion process. The finality is giving max impact and compression resistance on critical areas. The boat has a sacrificial crash box at the bow and another one at the stern. The cabin can have a watertight door. Even with all the kevlar reinforcements in what regards resistance to impact I believe that the aluminium hull will be a better option.

Regarding dimensions (m, kg, m2, L): LOA:  G - 14.21; C - 13.99. LWL: G- 12.57; C - 13.97. Beam: G - 4.44; C - 4.50. Displacement: G - 14 100; C - 11 500. Draft: G - 1.14/2.90; C - 1.60/3.50. Ballast: G - 4300; C - 4800. Sail Area upwind: G - 91.0; C - 85.3 (with Jib) 116 (with Genoa). Engine: G - 55/75hp; C - 75hp. Tankage: G - Water 500; Diesel 700; C - Water 440; Diesel 680.

From the dimensions we can see that to a very close LOA and Beam correspond a bigger  LWL and ballast on the Comet. The max draft is also deeper but the really huge difference regards RM and almost for sure AVS and inverted stability. The Comet has more 500kg of ballast but most of all it has all that ballast on a keel wilt 3.5m, while the Garcia has most of it inside the boat, just a bit below  the water line. The difference of effectiveness of both ballasts is huge as the stability of both boats, not in what concerns overall stability, due to the Garcia bigger weight, but in what concerns the stability/weight ratio.

The Comet will not only be a much more powerful boat in what regards sailing as  it will have a better reserve stability and will recover much quickly from a knock out. The Garcia has the advantage of maintaining intact its stability with the centerboard up and that can be important regarding seaworthiness in extreme weather but probably the Comet with the keel up will have a similar stability to the one of Garcia.

It seems to me that the Garcia is a more specific yacht, pointed to voyages in extreme latitudes while the Comet will also be able to do that (even with a less resistant hull) but will be a more versatile sailboat with a much better sailing performance, a long range cruising boat with a big autonomy and seaworthiness.

Both boats can be sailed from the interior and have an all around view from the cabin and the rigging is designed to be used by a solo sailor.

The Comet  looked a lot worse on the first low quality drawings. On the new ones the boat looks a lot better and more elegant than the Garcia that,as I have already said, looks fat and too high to me. Not that I find the Comet particularly beautiful even if I like the hull.

Boat Plans Bruce Roberts | THE SEXIEST BOAT A44 WON THE EUROPEAN BOAT OF THE YEAR CONTEST

Boat Plans Bruce Roberts

I am talking about the Advanced yachts 44 and the "sexiest one" was just my opinion that I posted some months back here:
http://interestingsailboats.blogspot.pt/2014/10/the-sexiest-boat-around-is-on-water-a44.html

Off course, I did not have sailed the boat (unfortunately) and what I said was only based on the yacht design, technical characteristics and my knowledge about sailboat design but it seems that my assessment was correct and what 11 boat testers from 11 different countries said about the boat was not less enthusiastic than what I wrote on that post. The boat won the 2015 boat of the year contest on the category of special yachts and the comments the diverse test sailors made about the boat (sailed on demanding conditions) deserve to be read:

Yachting World, UK: ..wild and different. The Advanced 44 lives up to her name by being the most contemporary monohull of 2014, and one that puts sailing pleasure above any trivialities like practicality and cost. And what a sensation she provides… the ride is stable, direct and super-responsive – this is a true supercar of the sea....A great job by Nauta Design and Roberto Biscontini, she has performance to match the style –and congratulations to Advanced for having the balls to do such a project! "

Fare Vela, ITA:“An extreme and expensive weekend fast sailer, which shows one of the best open-style hulls ever tested. We sailed the Advanced 44 in extreme conditions, not exactly her field, but she moved softly and powerfully in big and confused waves, as well as surfing for long periods in a very stable way, even when underpowered. Plus she has a very interesting interior concept".

Voile and Voiliers, FR: “If a boat deserves this nomination, it is the A44. Yes it is much too big for a day cruiser, much too expensive for the average sailor and much too powerful for a crew of two. But its sailing ability upwind is nothing short of fantastic"...

Yacht.de, GER: “This disturbingly new yacht, which refuses to fit in any known market segment, elevates performance sailing to a new level. In cross-seas and fresh breeze she keeps her groove almost by herself, allowing fingertip steering and offering the finest feedback. Simply the best serial production big boat I have sailed to date. Its a Ferrari Enzo on the water: expensive, unreasonable, impractical – but oh so great.”

Marina.ch, SUI:  "Italian style at its best! With the Advanced 44, an experienced crew will win regattas. But this boat is also a luxury daycruiser and weekender too.”

Seilas, NOR: "A small big yacht – The Advanced 44 has a cockpit of a 60 footer, and can keep a 60 footer’s pace through the water. We did 15 knots downwind with a gennaker in 18 knots wind! The upwind performance was like a racer. The interior is open, modern and stylish. This is Italian craft at its best.”

YachtRevue, AUT: “The Advanced 44 is an individual design with extraordinary performance, smart styling, sophisticated deck-layout and a special atmosphere below deck.”

BadNyt, DEN: “A statement of what is to come to the keelboat market in the near future. It goes with the trend that weight is becoming essential for both the performance and in particular for the sensation of sailing.”

Boat Plans Wood | RM 1070 first video

Boat Plans Wood

Impressive: It takes some time to be convinced that it is just a 35ft boat!!! What was already a very good sailboat in its first version, the 1050, become better with the 1060 and even better with the 1070: A great small voyage boat with a big offshore potential.
The presentation movie made by Voile and Voilier at the Paris boat show:
http://www.voilesetvoiliers.com/les-videos/nautic-2014-rm-1070-pret-pour-le-large-/
and a movie with the "old" RM 1050, showing its speed and offshore abilities:
