Boat Building Plans And Kits | NEO 350 WHAT A LOOKER!!!

Boat Building Plans And Kits

After the incredibly good performance of the big sister, the Neo 400 on the last middle sea race, under gale conditions, there was no doubt that the boat had a big offshore potential and also that the inverted bow helped to control water projections and to keep its nose up. A big design success for Ceccareli and after such a good boat we all wanted more and more to come.

The first one after the Neo 400 is a 350 that can have waterballast for racing offshore. The boat is as beautiful or even more beautiful than the big sister and contrary to it, it is not made of carbon. To keep costs down it is basically a vacuum infused epoxy e-glass boat with some parts in carbon (spars, rudder, bowsprit, tiller, bulkheads, keel frames).

Keeping costs down is a way of speaking because such a high quality built is expensive and this beauty costs a bit less than 200 000 euros (with VAT). Two versions will be available, a cruising one with aluminium spars and a racing one but I bet that even the "slower" version will be a very fast sailboat, able to win races.

The Neo 350 will have a hull length of 10.70m will weight only 3650kg of which 1500kg are ballast on a lead bulb at the end of a steel foil. The beam is considerable (3.53m)the draft is moderate (2.05m) and the RM is huge, allowing for 72sqm of sail upwind.

The interior disposition is interesting, similar to the bigger boat, but only when the first boat comes out we will see if it is as much spartan as the one of Neo 400 or if this is a boat that is pointed to a more vast clientele with a nicer finished interior.
Anyway a very beautiful boat that will make proud any owner and will raise a lot of envy looks: Italian design and boat building at its best ;-)

The Neo 400 blasting on the last Middle of the sea race:

Boat Plans And Patterns | XC 45 MKII test video

Boat Plans And Patterns

If you are thinking in buying a Halberg Rassy, have a good look at this one. It is not properly cheaper but it is a superior boat in many counts if not in all. This is not the racer (XP line) but an heavier stronger cruiser and a boat with an astonishing sail performance, giving its weight. If you dont believe me go to the results of the last editions of the ARC and you will find these comfortable heavy cruisers among the fastest boats of their size, among cruiser-racers.

I have already posted about the XC45 MKII:
http://interestingsailboats.blogspot.gr/2014/11/xc-45-mkii.html

The sail test is by Toby Hodges from Yachting world...and his opinion is not very different from mine ;-)

Yacht Boat Plans | BARCELONA WORLD RACE GREAT NEWS

Yacht Boat Plans

And the good news is that we have a race not between two boats, as I feared, but between 4 boats. Surprisingly, at least for me, besides Stamm/Le Cam, Alex/Ribes there are two more competitive boats and teams. Not only Altadill/Munõz but Corbella/Marín are among the first. Corbella/Marín are leading at this moment. A Race that risked to be boring has been a very interesting one.
Also bad news, it seems to me that the boat of Riechers/Audigane is not able to follow the  leading group. They spent a lot of money and time trying to make it a competitive boat for the next Vendee Globe but it does not seem that they have managed.
A very nice movie about last edition and the crews on this one.

For following the race, a tracker with good weather information:

Boat Plans Bolger | GREAT JPK 1080 VIDEO!!!

Boat Plans Bolger

Just some days after that post about the JPK 1080 interior Yacht.de posted a video with them test sailing the boat. The video is great but Michael Good, the test sailor, has to improve his solo sailing skills LOL. The video:

Boat Plans Building | 25 YEARS LATER ANOTHER DRAGONFLY 25

Boat Plans Building

The 25 was the first Dragonfly so a new 25 means something, this was supposed to be a very special boat and it is in fact a more modern design but I think they could have gone further. The floaters are beautiful with a lot of buoyancy (160%) but the central hull could be nicer (in what regards that the new Corsair daysailer seems nicer to me).
A very nice boat with an interior suitable for short range coastal cruising and certainly a good racer, a very fast sailing boat for sure. They have already sold 5 boats that should cost about 69 000 euros (without VAT) with a 5hp outboard and sails.
They say about the boat:

"Both versions will have the same offcenter Kickup centerboard in the mainhull, to create more space inside the boat and the centerboard casing is hidden inside and under the port sofa seat in the center cabin. Both rudder systems will also be able to kickup.

The standardboat will have a 10.50 m Aluminium rotating mast and the Sport version will have a 11.80 m rotating Carbon mast.
The floatdesign is in a total new design and construction, still asymmetric shapes to get better hydrodynamic lift and also to get more buoyancy in the right place. The floats are in new and better hydrodynamic design, so the floats will be more fun to push harder and will have better waterflow.
The floats will have 160% volume, and will be the highest volume floats we have yet ever made in our designs. This means the boat can actually easy fly the centerhull, not that this is the purpose, as the boat will be fastest when the centerhull is just airborne, but it will give more safety as also the floats are actually 30 cm longer forward of the centerhull to give more diagonal safety and stability."

Boat Trailer Plans Australia | GRAND SOLEIL 46LC MOVIE

Boat Trailer Plans Australia

I have already talked about the new Grand Soleil 46 LC, that stands for long cruising, the first of a new line of boats. They will maintain the previous line, the GS, a more sportive one where they have a 46.
 http://interestingsailboats.blogspot.pt/2014/04/grand-soleil-46-lc.html

The GS line offers fast performance cruisers with great cruising interiors and certainly the 47 is a long range cruising boat but I understand Grand Soleil: They are on the business of selling boats and they have not sold many on the last years and they know that main market cruisers sell more than more expensive performance cruisers and that wives are normally determinant in what regards choosing a boat and wives look at boat interiors and care for little else. So this boat is about that, a bigger nicer interior and that means a beamier boat with a higher freeboard and probably a less expensive boat. For what I can see on the new movie the interior seems great and certainly will seduce a lot of wives ;-) being also a great interior for extensive living aboard with all comfort... and the new Grand Soleil will sail better than a Bavaria or a Beneteau, so, it can be the right choice regarding the family point of view.
But will sail worse than a Grand Soleil GS 47 and the 47 has already a great cruising interior even if slightly smaller than the one from the LC 46 that looks a bit nicer too. But if the interior of 46 seems nicer, on the outside it is the opposite, the 46 bigger freeboard makes it uglier . I would certainly try to convince my wive regarding having a 47 over the 46...but then there is the "small " question regarding price. Does anybody knows the price of the new LC46?

Wood Boat Plans And Kits | DOES CRUISING BOATS NEED TRAINING WHEELS

Wood Boat Plans And Kits

On the cruising forum where I post as "Polux" I have posted something about hull shapes and performance that may be interesting to this blog. The post is here (post 258):
http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f47/true-blue-water-boat-extinction-a-fait-accompli-141354-18.html#post1754758
From here comes the basic question: The qualities that make a good racing solo sailboat are relevant to a cruising boat? Or putting it another way, the type of hulls and rigs used for solo racing are relevant for cruising, as a benefic global influence that can allow better cruising boats? The type of hull that allows a solo sailor to push and sail fast (many times under autopilot) a racer through ocean has advantages for an inexperienced, solo or short crew cruiser while sailing offshore on a cruising boat?

As a way to answer lets have first a look at the differences between the type of hulls used for solo racing and the type of hulls used for crew racing: Many think that the very beamy Open 60 are the fastest type of boat downwind (for the size) or on a circumnavigation but they are wrong. Certainly they are the type of boat faster sailing solo on a circumnavigation but not if a crew is used. On that case a boat like the VOR65 (with 60ft) will be faster, provided it has a full crew to handle it.

Let’s have a look at both hulls, a VOR 65 and a Open 60 (both sailboats designed for a circumnavigation on the trade winds, meaning mostly beam reach and downwind sailing):

The difference is evident, both have all beam pulled back but the Open 60 is a much more beamier boat. So why not make an Open 60 less beamier and theoretically faster? It has been made…and did not work out, they have been developing these boats for 30 years, and the actual configuration it is the one that at the moment allows for a faster boat…sailed solo. Why?

Let’s look at some videos of 11/12m racing boats, solo racing boats and crew racing boats to understand why. First a Beneteau Figaro II versus a J111. Both boats can go damn fast downwind, the J111 even faster but look at the guy on the Figaro that can leave the boat on autopilot to adjust sails or even to go ahead to set the Spinnaker. He has to leave it on autopilot on many occasions inclusive to sleep.

Compare with the guys on the J111, even with a short crew they need three guys to keep it out of broaching, one at the wheel, other constantly trimming the front sail and a reserve one for the mainsail or for helping if something goes wrong. The J111 is a cruiser racer, if look to truly race boats, like a Soto 40 or a Ker 40, the control has to be even more precise and a bigger crew is required:
Now compare with a same sized solo racer, a 40class boat sailed by a lonely sailor and will be on a completely different ball game. One guy is enough to drive the boat fast downwind, not as fast as a ker 40 or Soto 40, but certainly much faster than a Soto 40 or Ker 40 solo sailed. On a solo racer the boat has to be handled many times on autopilot since it is the same guy that is the trimmer, the bow man, the navigator the helmsman….and it has also to work on the winches and to sleep since most of the races on those boats are Transats or circumnavigations.
Bob Perry said once that those boats had training wheels and that he didnt need any training wheels on his boats. So the question is, do cruising boats need training wheels, meaning they can be sailed faster and safely with them …or maybe not?
J111
Luca, the guy from Comar maintenance said that he was part of the crew that test sailed the first Comet 41s (my boat) and that on the maiden sail they had sailed it at 18K. Well, I have owned my boat for two years now and I have never went faster then 14K (and even so on only one occasion) and I know that I will never sail it at 18k simply because for that the boat needs a crew. Don’t make me wrong, that is a fast boat and a relatively easy boat to sail with a huge resistance to broaching and an incredibly sensible rudder. Just with a bit of help with my wife, or even solo I can sail pretty fast on it, specially upwind but the downwind sailing speed (no spinnaker) is most cases between 9.5 and 11.5K, a bit more in  really strong winds, not anything closer to 18K. That is what the boat can do with a full crew and a spinnaker up in strong wind.
J111

My friend Eric, that is not much younger than me, said it has not taken him much time to sail his Pogo 12.50 to 13/14K and that is a speed that he reaches with some ease on the right conditions. I may be wrong but I seem to remember that he said that he had done once or twice 16/18K with his boat, with the help of the family crew, that includes not only a wife but a son also.

Me and Eric are the kind of cruisers that like to go fast, most cruisers will sail more calmly but the point is, would not this difference in easiness (that has to do with the hull of the Pogo to be derived from solo racers, while the one of the Comet is derived from IRC racers) will not suit even more less demanding sailors? I think that the answer is a clear yes and that’s why most contemporary NA use hulls influenced by solo racers in almost all main market production sailboats and in voyage boats too. The ability they have to go with more easiness, with more directional stability from a beam reach to downwind makes more efficient on autopilot that’s what most cruisers use while sailing. That type of hulls makes also for a more forgiving boat that can take more abuse without broaching.
Beneteau Figaro II

So what about upwind sailing? will more narrow boats, or IRC derived hulls, like the ones of the Salona or Dehler, Comet or J122 perform better? The difference will be not much on flat seas, just a bit better pointing ability but on  nasty seas or even on the typical med short period steep waves there will be a big difference due to wave drag.

While sailing on flat water the waterplane (and wet surface) of the boat like the Pogo will be a very narrow one, having to do more with its weight than with its beam but while passing waves all change: The wave envelopes the boat that passes through it and increases hugely the wet surface associated to wave drag that is much bigger on a solo racer beamy type of hull than on a much narrower IRC derived one. The beamy hull will suffer much more drag for each wave it crosses than the IRC type. Sure it can fly more sail due to its much bigger hull form stability but that will not even the match. The boat will have to open more the course (to gain power), probably it will go a little faster, storming through the waves (and that is less comfortable) and in the end it will be slower, or at least is what I have taken from the observation of race results even with more powerful 40class racers (on the Sydney Hobart and Med races).
Soto 40

Heavier boats with this type of hull, like the Oceanis 38, 41 or 45, Dufour 410, 500 (among others)  will have about the same comparable characteristics regarding cruisers with about the same weight and hulls influenced by IRC hulls, like the Jeanneau 409.

Is this less good performance upwind on some particular conditions a big disadvantage? Not for voyage boats that mostly will follow the trade winds, not for main market mass production boats because even if most sail on the med where these conditions can be met, most sailors just don’t go upwind on those conditions (over F4) or just motor most of the time when sailing directly upwind.
40class racer
That explains why the open solo race type of hull is the main influence on cruisers today: it just offers the best compromise for most sailors, not forgetting the big advantage that a bigger interior represents for cruising, in living space and storage.

Of course that does not mean that even in what regards cruising that would be the best compromise to all. There are many variables here and one can just prefer a narrower boat because it just likes more the way a boat sails on a seaway, because it is more nervous and fun to sail, because it values more upwind sailing or just because he finds narrower boats more beautiful. All good reasons. ;-)

Plywood Boat Plans Australia | GRAND SOLEIL 46LC VIDEO TESTS

Plywood Boat Plans Australia

This is the third post about a boat that on the first post I said that i did not like very much LOL. At the time I had only seen the drawings and I presumed this was just a cheaper main market version of the Grand Soleil 47. Well I was wrong. I saw the boat in Dusseldorf and was impressed with the quality, interior space, design and rigging of the boat. The galley and saloon are particularly impressive.

I guess I was letting my personal preferences get in the way of objectivity: this is a very different boat from the 47, that is a performance cruiser with a great living interior. The 46LC points not to the same market but to the ones that like to cruise in an easy way, with the minimum fuss about the sails and sail trimming, with a maximized quality living interior on a boat that nevertheless is a fast boat for this type of yacht.

I would say that it was very indicated for living aboard if I didnt saw a problem with storage. I dont know if they will make a two cabin version. The only one I saw advertised is the three cabin that have beautiful huge aft cabins, at the cost of the two "normal" cockpit storage lockers. The boat has on the cockpit, besides the  one for gas, a deep narrow one (for fenders) and a big central one, that unfortunately has a somewhat narrow hatch.

Not very practical. A  big hatch or two smaller ones would make a lot more sense. On the interior of the boat you have also some spaces under the floor, on the bilges, that are deeper than on most modern boats, but what you can store there is limited in shape and type of things. That lack of useful storage in this type of boat is unfortunate. The boat has a very good tankage, with 600L of water and 300l of diesel...with a very small black water tank (30L). The engine is powerful for a 12T boat (75hp) and the boat has a very good stability not only due to a big hull form stability but also due to a considerable draft (2.3m), a modern keel, and considering all that, a high B/D (35%).
Taking in account the quality, the price is attractive and starts at 369 000 euros, VAT excluded and includes some equipment. Now, to be a perfect living aboard boat and join in that sector the Sense 46, all it would be needed is a two cabin version with a big locker with access from the interior and the outside, one with space for a wash machine, since the generator can perfectly be on the cockpit one. Maybe they come up with one ;-)

The tests from the British Yachtingw World magazine and the New Zealand boating magazine: And for comparison purposes here is the faster and more "complicated" to trim Grand Soleil 47, a performance cruiser with a good cruising interior, but not as good and spacious as the one from the GS 46LC:

Boat Plans Bartender | INCREDIBLE DEALS AT DUSSELDORF BOAT SHOW

Boat Plans Bartender

This is a post about boat prices and great deals on the Dusseldorf boat show but only valid for 3 days or so (during the boat show). I thought that even so this probably would interest some. As usually I went to the Dusseldorf boat show, to Dusseldorf  too, for the beer and the people that I find great. They like to socialize through the night, drinking beer, of course,...on the outside, sometimes with temperatures below zero. I guess its a way of maintaining the beer cold LOL. Now for that you need to be German or at least Nordic, not for me even if I like the spirit.  Anyway inside the good old breweries it is crowded and it is very difficult to find a place to seat anyway, even in the middle of the week.

Jeanneau 379
Now, regarding boats, this year a friend asked me to help him to buy a boat and as I have said the best thing when one is going to buy a sailboat (unless the money is no problem) is to have an open choice and look for good deals.

My friend wanted a boat between 37 and 40ft but the budget was not really up to it. He wanted also a fast boat. So we started with the Oceanis 38 that was discarded because he did not like it and I have to say I was not impressed with the finish too. I heard so much good about the interior on American forums that maybe they are better finished on US, I dont know.
Dehler 38

The Jeanneau 379 looked better to us and we went for a full offer. My friend is French and we found a nice guy, a French dealer for most of Southern France (the best ones are almost always the bigger dealers). He went below standard price offering not only the boat show discount but also a dealer discount. The boat with all the options and VAT cost a bit less than 200 000 euros. Thats about what I expected. Not a great deal, just a fair one.

Varianta 37
Then we went to Dehler and the very practical young  German dealer said to us that no way we would have a minimal equipped sailboat for less than 220 000 euros (with VAT) and I know that if he said that then a decently equipped boat would went for more, so we looked instead to the Varianta 37, with pretty much all options. A good fast sailboat with an Ikea interior that would go for about 135000 euros including VAT. My friend did not like the Ikea interior. I still think it is a great boat for the price and the interior can be bettered with time.
Elan 400
We had a look at the Elan 400 but they said the minimum price for a minimum equipped boat should be about 240 000 euros, so we gave up. Went to Dufour that has a new 382 with a fantastic interior but with undersized winches and a kind simplified rigging and the price was just a bit over the one of the Jeanneau 379 but then it happened the first interesting thing:
Dufour 382
This dealer was the only one that was a sailor, understood what we wanted (by the comments about the Dufour 382 to be all about interior and less about sailing) and said that unfortunately thats what people want and that real sailing boats, like the performance Dufour series (like the First from Beneteau) were selling badly, that they were not even bringing the boats to the boat show and were lowering the prices, saying that probably they would stop doing them.
Dufour 40e
So I asked, lowering to what point? and asked him about the best possible bargain for a Dufour 40e performance. He talked to his boss in Paris, we talked about options and I was really surprised with the price he could make on that boat. As he understood that even so it was out of budget, he talked again on the phone and the final price was (if I remember correctly) something like 214 000 Euros (or 204 000?), including everything and delivered on the med. That was a very good price, specially if compared with the one from the Jeanneau 379. The Dufour 40e is a much better boat and with a lot more sailing equipment, much bigger too. He took out of the boat price more than 35 000 euros. If you are interested go for it. The same kind of discount (a huge one) can be made on the Dufour 45e, an awesome boat.

Ok, the price was great but a bit out of the budget so we went to Salona. They will have a new 38 not on this summer but on the next one and I was hopping that they could make a great price on the current 38. My friend sails on the Med, not in France so I asked to the guy from the factory for a direct deal, picking the boat at Marina Kastella, near the factory in Croatia and the results were quite surprising: 25% discount on the boat 50% discount on extras.

Probably you will only get this if you buy directly the boat from the factory and not through a dealer so dont even mention that to the dealer in your area. The result: A well equipped Salona 38 by almost the same price of the Varianta 37!!!! (135 000 euros without VAT).

The boat can be bought with a French leasing and the final price will be lower than the one of the boat with VAT. Thats the one he bought. I have to say that in what regards size, quality of building, deck hardware, speed and seaworthiness the Salona is way better than the jeanneau 379 (that is a 36ft boat) and being able to buy one for about 30 000euros less than the Jeanneau is absolutely incredible and just gives credit for what I said: When buying keep an open approach and look for the great deals, that most of the time are not the boats they have on the boatshow (Salona had no boats on the boat show).

No, this are boats with the hulls from the last generation and thats why you can have good deals on them. Will they have a difference in performance regarding a new hull? Well, if everything was equal on the boats, yes a slightly one and probably an increased downwind performance but irrelevant in what regards cruising and I was saying if everything was the same. Like its is the Saloan 38 will blow completely away the Jeanneau 379 or the Dufour 382, new hull and all and the Dufour 40e will be even faster than the Salona.

Boat Blind Plans | FASTNET 1979 AND THE GRIMALKIN TRAGEDY

Boat Blind Plans

I had posted about it on the old thread but I saw the movie again (BBC) and decided that it has to be here. It is one of the best sailing movies ever. I will post also a very interesting movie with Nick Ward and the one that saved him form Grimalkin. Nick published a book with the story. Curiously the skippers son and also part of the Grimalkins crew, Mattew Sheahan (then with 17) is a prominent tester and Journalist for Yachting World Magazine. After a life racing sailboats he likes a lot what he calls the "Pogo factor" and has been responsible, among the rather conservative British nautical press, for a fresh  new look regarding cruising boats directed influenced by the racing solo racers.
What happened on Grimalkin was controversial: some took a liferaft when they thought the boat was sinking but leaved two behind and thats the reason of the book title:"Left for dead":  http://www.amazon.com/Left-Dead-Surviving-Deadliest-Sailing/dp/1596914556
Read also this interesting description of what happened:

"Sea Fever: For Those in Peril" - Fastnet Race Disaster, 1979 from Hidden Picture Productions on Vimeo.
And the Grimalkin...still races:

Boat Plans For A Chesapeake Deadrise | SOLARIS 50 BOAT TEST A GREAT SAILING BOAT

Boat Plans For A Chesapeake Deadrise

First of all a word of thanks to the ones that have sent me personal messages asking if I had some problem and when the blog would be continued. It will be continued in October since I am sailing and with no time for it right now, except that I had a problem on the saildrive of my boat and while I am at Corfu waiting for it to be fixed,  I will have some time available. So in between some posts and the first one about a favorite, the Solaris 50.

I had already talked about this boat that impressed me on the last Dusseldorf boat show and I had posted already about it: http://interestingsailboats.blogspot.it/2015/03/solaris-50-i-love-it.html

I will not repeat myself regarding the above post just will post some new pictures and refer what Yachting World and Toby Hodges (that tested the boat) say about it:

"This new 50-footer follows the fiendishly cool Solaris 58, which launched in early 2014 – including the pièce-de-resistance dreadnought bow and subtle aft chines. But, at nearly half the price of her larger sister, the Solaris 50 should prove a popular choice.
As the latest Acebal-designed range of Solaris yachts become increasingly sleeker, one thing hasn’t changed: their build quality remains top-drawer.
Javier Soto Acebal has drawn a hull that promises strong performance with a soft motion. It will have an integrated bowsprit for flying Code 0s and gennakers, and a self-tacking jib as standard for easy short-handed sailing.
Stowage has been well-considered throughout. The large sail locker can be converted to a crew cabin and a longitudinal garage will facilitate the launch and recovery of a tender. There is dedicated liferaft stowage and a wet-hanging locker inside, with drip tray and drainage."
 http://www.yachtingworld.com/yachts-and-gear/solaris-50-new-yacht-62492#2WZLoGYwJfbr1gSC.99
On the video talking about how it sails Toby says "Fantastic", regarding the boat "the sexiest 50 ft around" with a "smartly finished interior" "built and finished very well".
I would say a cruising boat for the ones that really like sailing as much as cruising and  also for the ones for whom beauty is an important matter in a sailingboat.

Just a final word about something you dont see but it is there: First the cockpit table, hidden under the cockpit floor, very easy to deploy and the Spray-hood also completely hidden and also easy to rise or store away. Another thing you dont see is the price that I would say it is surprisingly low at 480 000 euros, much less than what would cost a Halberg Rassy that I would say has a similar quality. Maybe thats one of the reasons why they have already sold several of these beauties.
