Laying out your Boat Interior
When laying out an interior arrangement, whether it is for a cabin boat, day boat or even a fishing boat, you need to ask yourself “How is this space going to be used?”

What different activities or functions are going to take place, and how do they relate to each other? Which functions will happen more often and which are more important to the smooth workings of the boat?  Look closely at the boats definition or specifications, where the boat will be operating and what it needs to be able to do. Then diagram these functions or activities to show how they relate to each other. Activity flow diagrams show which functions relate to one another. Areas in the boat that relate functionally should be located to create accessibility and unrelated areas should be located to minimize interference.

As an example, let’s pick an activity related to the area you are designing or laying out. Here we’ll choose an activity that you can do in your own home, making sandwiches for four because we’re designing or laying out a galley. Have on hand the supplies you need and have them in their proper storage places. As you perform the activity, write down every single hand and body movement and action.

The list would start something like this:

1/ Walk to refrigerator

2/ W/ right hand, pull handle to open the door

3/ W/ left hand, reach in and remove bread

4/ Put bread on the counter next to the refrigerator

5/ W/ left hand, reach in and remove cold cuts

6/ Put cold cuts on the counter next to the refrigerator

7/ W/ left hand, reach in and remove mayonnaise

8/ Put mayonnaise on the counter next to the fridge

9/ Close fridge door w/ right hand

10/ Carry bread, cold cuts and mayonnaise to counter area

11/ Walk to utensil drawer (Count the steps required as individual movements)

12/ Open drawer w/ left hand

13 Reach in and remove a spreading knife w/ right hand

14/ Close the drawer w/ left hand

15/ etc etc

Here we are at 15 movements and we haven’t even started to make the sandwiches yet! This activity sound simple, but it takes time to complete because you are becoming aware of each and every hand and body movement. Something to note though here, you’re completing this activity in your own home which sits static, in other words, not moving. In a moving boat, no doubt you can add more movements depending on the sea conditions at the time.

The key is actually doing it because there are always aspects of our activities that we take for granted. Drawing a diagram with lines between locations of each step (as shown above), shows the movements involved.

When you look at the activities step by step, you begin to see how to improve a layout and understand its importance.

After completing your task and list, apply what you’ve done in your kitchen to an area of your boat. You may find that you’re fishing storage areas are to far apart or that your helm station is awkward and hard to access storage areas relevant to driving the boat. You may find it very difficult to deploy an anchor with the current deck layout. Overall, you may find yourself doing a task and asking yourself “Where is my third arm?” Difficult or uncomfortable movements indicate problem areas in the layout. Ask yourself. “Where else can tools, equipment, or surfaces be located?”

The number of steps or movements can be minimized by locating tools and surfaces appropriately when designing a new work area. Knowing every hand and body movement involved in an activity as well a specific tools, will provide essential information. Ask yourself “How can I simplify the movements or ease the task at hand?” Laying out your boat, minimize the movements relating to all your fishing equipment, tools to repair an outboard or anything else that you can think of. Once you’ve gone thru your layout to minimized the movements as mentioned, it’s when you’re finally out there everything you’ll find that everything will operate smoothly

Tonys Cruise Control 5.2

On the way home from Brisbane, we managed to find time for a quick stop to visit Tonys Cruise Control 5.2. It was great to meet both Tony and Karen finally in person and, also have a chat about their boat. It was great also to see the Cruise Control design for the first time "in the flesh". Wow, its big ! Tony was about to give his Cruise Control 5.2 its final coat on the bottom plate when we arrived, but by the time you read this, his boat will be getting rolled over to begin the interior glassing and fit-out. 

Overall, his boat looked AWESOME!!  Just wish it was rolled over so I could have jumped inside !

Phils RipTide 457

We finally got some new pictures of Phils Riptide 457.
Phil got delayed for a while due to the aftermath of the Brisbane floods so now that hes now all caught up, we look forward to seeing more of his build over the coming weeks. We had hoped to catrch up with him whilst in Briso, but unfortunatly didnt have the time.

Grahams SportzMaster 19

On the way home from Brisbane , we dropped in to visit Graham and Helen and to see their SportzMaster 19. All I could say was WOW ! What a sweet looking boat ! After crawing around the outside, I finally climbed inside. Damn, Grahams photos do not give it justice as to just how big this boat is ! Its bloody huge ! As I couldnt stay for long, but we yakked about his boat for a while, swapping a few ideas around as to what he wanted in the design. Looking forward to his launching !

Overall, it was great to catch up, just wish I didnt forget to bring my camera with me to take a few pictures, but I will next time thats for sure.

Searching the net looking for a design to build, you’re confronted with so many plywood designs, its no wonder that it takes so long to make a final decision. What I find staggering though is, when it comes to plywood designs, how typically “agricultural ‘they look, when it comes to the interior joiner work or even overall design. It’s like they were designed back in the 1930-40’s.

Unfortunately, when it comes to most plywood designs, this concept seems to be the norm. The major drawback with this style of furniture or interior layout is that overall, it can make a good design to look cheap, rough and if your workmanship is not up to par for whatever reason, your mistakes will really stand out.

Typically when you get aboard a boat, what you don’t realize is that your eye is gauging straight lines, one against the other. This means that if “one line” is slightly off from another, your eye picks it out straight away and notes the mistake. Then after spending some time aboard and without realizing your doing, you’ve noticed so many “off” lines subconsciously, that you’ve decide that you don’t like the boat and walk away.

Another problem with “hard” furniture is safety. Walk around any boat with hard corners in a seaway and it won’t be long and you’ll be slammed into the corner. I don’t know how many boats that I’ve been on and every time I walk off, I come away with a bruise or two.

Overall, hard or box type interiors may be easy to construct, but as far as appeal is concerned...Yuk. You may get drawn in initially, but as quick as a flash, you’re ripped out the back with bruises to show for it.

There is a way around this though…curved furniture and curved lines.

Walk aboard any million dollar boat and you’ll notice straight of that you don’t see any straight lines. All lines are curved and the furniture as well. Why? Curves draw you in, giving the impression of comfort, warmth and space and without you realizing, the end result is you don’t want to leave. You can do the same with any boat, even including a fishing boat. A days outing on board will leave you with the feeling of being refreshed with the end result wanting to go boating more often.

?? Building curved furniture in plywood is easy. Sure it may take a little longer to construct, but the end result is well worth it. The Sportzmaster 19, the Cruise Control 5.2 and the Black Label all have curved furniture and the plans even tell you how to construct it. Sure, they may be strip plank designs, but as our new plywood designs slowly come on line, they to will also included “curved interiors”. ??????

So I guess what I’m trying to say here is, just because you may be building a plywood boat doesn’t mean that it need be agricultural in its looks or layout. We live in the 21st century now, so think “curves”.????????

Plywood Boat Plans Australia | RM 1070 A GOOD SURPRISE

I had already posted about the new RM 1070. At the time little was known about the boat and looked to me a 1060 MKII with a new bow and a swing keel to join to the other keel options. After all the 1060 is only 4 years old:

And the good surprise is that incredibly this is a brand new boat. Not only the bow is different but all the hull, including a very different transom...and I like it a lot more than the 1060 :-) The interior is different too with a true cabin at the bow. I hope it will be in Dusseldorf. I want very much to see this one. It looks absolutely gorgeous and I bet it will sail better than the 1060 and the 1060 sailed  very well.

The difference at the bow is easy to spot, being inverted and all but the transom one, even if evident requires a look at the two. As you can see very different, being the new one very near the one of an Open 60 in design. This boat will have a huge form stability and will be very easy to sail fast downwind, being even more powerful than the 1060.

 About the light wind performance and upwind sailing I have some doubts that it will be better. Time and the first tests will tell.

There is just one thing I dont like: Why have they maintained, on the two wheel version, the winches on a position that only makes sense on the rudder version? On the two wheel version at least one of those winches (on each side) should be moved near the wheel, at reach of the Welshman.

Regarding the previous boat the beam is practically the same (4.00m), the hull is slightly bigger (10.69/10.57m) and the LWL bigger( 10.50/10.30), the boat will be a bit heavier (4900/4600kg) probably on the swing keel configuration. The new Swing keel will have 1.15/2.92m. The boat will be more powerful and will carry more sail (72.50/71.6m2).

Boat Blind Plans | JPK 1080 CRUISING INTERIOR

I have already talked on the blog about this extraordinary boat and its very close competitor, the Sunfast 3600. The two are very fast and very close in what regards performance. The JPK 10.80 won the first leg of the Transquadra but the difference was so minimal that either boat could have won. They are also both very good at crewed regattas and again very close, but the JPK 10.80 is incomparably better in what regards a cruising interior and cruising potential.

Looking at this photo we can see that the JPK 1080 offers a nice and comfortable interior, not properly what we would expect on a racer and one that will allow for family cruising out of the racing time. A true cruiser-racer while the Sunfast 3600 has the minimal interiors of a racer. This make the JPK a more versatile boat...and those two openings that allow a forward view from the interior, besides being useful give it a very distinctive look, a cute one.... I like it a lot ;-)

Pontoon Boat Plans Aluminum | A VOR65 LOST ON THE REEFS movie

Pontoon Boat Plans Aluminum

Really sad, a beautiful brand new boat abandoned on a reef on the middle of nowhere, 260nm out of Mauritius Islands. All are well and have already been picked up. The boat, Vestas, was one of the competitors on the Volvo Ocean Race, a circumnavigation race. Pretty incredibly the way they did not notice that they had a small Island ahead. They did not grounded the boat on some isolated reef outside the Island but almost at the middle of it, 6NM from the beginning. I guess they were too much concentrated on racing to make a decent navigation :-(
