By voile magazine, and one of the long ones, a 100nm test. The magazine is available on Zinio but I can advance that they only say good things. It was the twin keel version and it performed as expected and that means well. They gave some numbers: 15K wind 8K speed, 40º TRW 6.5K speed. Not a mean machine upwind but not bad, considering the twin keel setup. A boat for voyaging on the trade winds and certainly one of the best at that, size by size.
As usual on this type of very large transoms the engine performance was poor and the cruising speed is just 5.5K. Anyway this is a sailboat and the 80L of diesel tankage does not give it a big autonomy while on engine.

If you are thinking in buying a Halberg Rassy, have a good look at this one. It is not properly cheaper but it is a superior boat in many counts if not in all. This is not the racer (XP line) but an heavier stronger cruiser and a boat with an astonishing sail performance, giving its weight. If you dont believe me go to the results of the last editions of the ARC and you will find these comfortable heavy cruisers among the fastest boats of their size, among cruiser-racers.
I have already posted about the XC45 MKII: http://interestingsailboats.blogspot.gr/2014/11/xc-45-mkii.html
The sail test is by Toby Hodges from Yachting world...and his opinion is not very different from mine ;-)

Two friends one with a Django 7.70 other with a First 33.7 decided to make a kind of test sail between the two boats. I know, not fair, the First is considerably bigger and an older design but even so I found interesting the video and the comments on You tube:
Not a great video too since both boats are not shown sailing side by side but the information is interesting: With very light winds the First 33.7 is faster upwind and points better. With 20/25k winds the Django is a bit faster and more responsive. Well I would like more information but thats the only thing they say :-)

Not really a new boat, just a MKII but one that took away the biggest defect from the previous boat: it was not properly nice, even if a great boat at a very good price. Now you have all the previous qualities in a much nicer sailboat with a big and customizable interior. If I was looking for a 33ft sailboat I would be looking hard at this one:
Azuree 33C: LET YOUR CREATIVITY SET SAIL from Azuree Sailing on Vimeo.
The older model come out with bright colors from the last "Middle the sea race", raced on gale conditions. Many boats abandoned the race but the smaller of them all, the little Azuree 33, sailed only by a duo (one of them the NA) keep pushing and made a remarkable race.

That was before, now Wild Oats leads with a comfortable 40nm lead, the biggest difference between the two boats and confirms my suspects that on Comanche they should have kept a low profile in what regards all those statements about their boat being the fastest sailing monohull on the planet. I dont think Comanche will be able to catch Wild Oats that sails for another of the many consecutive victories on this race. What happened? Easy, light wind and bad seas, the worst conditions for Comanche type of boat, put him sailing at about half the speed of Wild Oats. The weak wind was enough to allow the low drag hull of Wild Oats to slice through the confused seas while not enough to allow enough power for Comanche to force the passage trough it. http://www.rolexsydneyhobart.com/tracker/
A great race as usual, cheers to the Australians and New Zealanders whose sailing passion has only a parallel with the French. I wish more countries will follow them on the love of sailing that is also ours.
Some great movies about the Sydney Hobart race:

I had already posted about the new RM 1070. At the time little was known about the boat and looked to me a 1060 MKII with a new bow and a swing keel to join to the other keel options. After all the 1060 is only 4 years old:
And the good surprise is that incredibly this is a brand new boat. Not only the bow is different but all the hull, including a very different transom...and I like it a lot more than the 1060 :-) The interior is different too with a true cabin at the bow. I hope it will be in Dusseldorf. I want very much to see this one. It looks absolutely gorgeous and I bet it will sail better than the 1060 and the 1060 sailed very well.
The difference at the bow is easy to spot, being inverted and all but the transom one, even if evident requires a look at the two. As you can see very different, being the new one very near the one of an Open 60 in design. This boat will have a huge form stability and will be very easy to sail fast downwind, being even more powerful than the 1060.
About the light wind performance and upwind sailing I have some doubts that it will be better. Time and the first tests will tell.
There is just one thing I dont like: Why have they maintained, on the two wheel version, the winches on a position that only makes sense on the rudder version? On the two wheel version at least one of those winches (on each side) should be moved near the wheel, at reach of the Welshman.
Regarding the previous boat the beam is practically the same (4.00m), the hull is slightly bigger (10.69/10.57m) and the LWL bigger( 10.50/10.30), the boat will be a bit heavier (4900/4600kg) probably on the swing keel configuration. The new Swing keel will have 1.15/2.92m. The boat will be more powerful and will carry more sail (72.50/71.6m2).

Really sad, a beautiful brand new boat abandoned on a reef on the middle of nowhere, 260nm out of Mauritius Islands. All are well and have already been picked up. The boat, Vestas, was one of the competitors on the Volvo Ocean Race, a circumnavigation race. Pretty incredibly the way they did not notice that they had a small Island ahead. They did not grounded the boat on some isolated reef outside the Island but almost at the middle of it, 6NM from the beginning. I guess they were too much concentrated on racing to make a decent navigation :-(

First of all a word of thanks to the ones that have sent me personal messages asking if I had some problem and when the blog would be continued. It will be continued in October since I am sailing and with no time for it right now, except that I had a problem on the saildrive of my boat and while I am at Corfu waiting for it to be fixed, I will have some time available. So in between some posts and the first one about a favorite, the Solaris 50.
I had already talked about this boat that impressed me on the last Dusseldorf boat show and I had posted already about it: http://interestingsailboats.blogspot.it/2015/03/solaris-50-i-love-it.html
I will not repeat myself regarding the above post just will post some new pictures and refer what Yachting World and Toby Hodges (that tested the boat) say about it:
"This new 50-footer follows the fiendishly cool Solaris 58, which launched in early 2014 including the pièce-de-resistance dreadnought bow and subtle aft chines. But, at nearly half the price of her larger sister, the Solaris 50 should prove a popular choice.
As the latest Acebal-designed range of Solaris yachts become increasingly sleeker, one thing hasnt changed: their build quality remains top-drawer.
Javier Soto Acebal has drawn a hull that promises strong performance with a soft motion. It will have an integrated bowsprit for flying Code 0s and gennakers, and a self-tacking jib as standard for easy short-handed sailing.
Stowage has been well-considered throughout. The large sail locker can be converted to a crew cabin and a longitudinal garage will facilitate the launch and recovery of a tender. There is dedicated liferaft stowage and a wet-hanging locker inside, with drip tray and drainage."
On the video talking about how it sails Toby says "Fantastic", regarding the boat "the sexiest 50 ft around" with a "smartly finished interior" "built and finished very well". I would say a cruising boat for the ones that really like sailing as much as cruising and also for the ones for whom beauty is an important matter in a sailingboat.
Just a final word about something you dont see but it is there: First the cockpit table, hidden under the cockpit floor, very easy to deploy and the Spray-hood also completely hidden and also easy to rise or store away. Another thing you dont see is the price that I would say it is surprisingly low at 480 000 euros, much less than what would cost a Halberg Rassy that I would say has a similar quality. Maybe thats one of the reasons why they have already sold several of these beauties.

and dont miss these two, from Yacht.de: http://www.yacht.de/yacht_tv/test_technik/endspurt-ii-europas-yacht-des-jahres/a94741.html http://www.yacht.de/yacht_tv/test_technik/endspurt-europas-yachten-des-jahres-i/a94637.html
So many beautiful sailboats gliding effortlessly in light wind, or bashing their way through difficult conditions, so many beautiful interiors that it is difficult not to be agreeably surprised with the overall quality. All types of boats seem to sail each year a little better than the last year and the interiors that were some years ago designed on the "house" are today designed by some of the best design cabinets. More and more yachts are not designed by a single NA but by a team that he leads and includes many different specialists, from structural engineers, specialists in composites, specialists in VPP and CFD analysis rig and rigging specialists and designers, and the added quality that team work brought to the boats looks and functionality is evident.
This year the testing took place in Atlantic France (la Rochelle) and in Italy, in Santa Margherita. On most boats they had the chance to sail them in very light and medium wind, some even in strong wind.

Ok, it finished some time ago but I was cruising and since this is a favorite race I will make a short post about it. This was the first year that the tour de France was raced on multihulls (Diam 24 trimarans) and it seems that the new boat satisfied all, even if in what regards seaworthiness it was far away from the previous monohull and that resulted on a cancelled race on the last day (more than 30k wind). That was really unfortunate since two teams were equal in points, Grupama (with Franck Cammas) and the Swiss-Franco team of Spindrift. With the cancellation Spindrift won because it had more 2nd places. The best movies:
This edition counted with a big number of famous sailors, many monohull top solo sailors as well as top maxi multihull sailors. Among the monohull solo sailors, Vicent Riou, Jérémie Beyou, Kito de Pavant, Bernard Stamm, and Tabarly. Riou has even won one of the races (with a little help of Billy Besson, triple world Nacra 17 champion). Buf for me the revelation was François Morvan. When he picked the tiller, Spindrift started to won almost all the races. François Morvan is not a kid and is the wheelsman of the big Spindrift (the biggest maxi racing trimaran, ex-Banque Populaire) but he had, on the last days, on the tiller of Groupama, Frack Cammas, as opposition. Chapeau Monsieur Morvan!!!
