Boat Plans Arch Davis | X4 41ft FROM THE NEW SERIES OF X YACHTS

Boat Plans Arch Davis

I have to say that never understood very well why X yachts have launched the XC series with the characteristic they have: Middle weight, very classical in design. Dont take me wrong, the XC series are great boats but I never understood why that type of boat would be the vision X yacht had of  a cruising boat. Maybe they just wanted to compete on the Halberg Rassy more traditional market and if it was all about that, no doubt that they accomplished the task.

But personally I would have took without any hesitation for cruising a boat from the XP line  over one of the XC. Sure, the XC has a better interior for cruising but all that weight does not make my style. I like rewarding boats to sail, even if I would like a Xp with a better cruising interior, not that the XP line has a bad one, but it is not a match for the cruising interior of the XC series.

Well it seems I am not the only one since X yacht launched a new series for me :-) and all that share my tastes, simply the X series. They describe the new line, referring to the first boat on the line, the X6 (the X4 is made according the same principles) like this:

"Utilizing the very latest state-of the art design concepts, yet unmistakably an X-Yacht, the X-Yachts designers started with a clean slate for the all-new X6. Developed to provide ultimate luxury, without sacrificing the renowned X-Yachts sailing performance, the X6 will take her owners and crew anywhere in sumptuous style and comfort...
Building upon the best features of the world beating Xcruising and Xperformance ranges, the X6 will utilize the same hi tech, low weight construction techniques as the latest generation of Xp racer-cruisers, including vacuum infused epoxy with localized carbon fiber reinforcements for strength, stiffness and stability.

The weight saved has been put to good use: allowing long-range fuel and water tanks, larger battery banks and optional equipment such as water makers and dive compressors to be fitted without sacrificing performance. The new ‘X’ range will be a luxurious and impressively fast collection of performance cruising yachts for state-of-the-art bluewater sailing".

Well, it makes sense to me ;-) The X4 will be a bit heavier than the XP series, but nothing like the XC. The new 41ft will weight 8850kg with a big B/D ratio (42.9%) for a boat with a standard draft of 2.20m and a torpedo keel. It will have a considerable beam of 3.95m (not beamy by modern standards) and that will give it a huge stability.

A L keel can also be provided, with a draft of 1.85m (and more ballast) or with the same ballast and 2.5m of draft (to compensate the less efficient keel design).

It will come with a 45hp engine, 97m2 of sail upwind, a tankage of 200L of diesel and 340L of water. First boats will be delivered next summer. I like it...maybe because it is very similar to my boat, that is just a bit less beamy and a bit lighter. My kind of cruisers ;-)

Boat Plans Stitch And Glue | SYDNEY HOBART THE MOVIES 1

Boat Plans Stitch And Glue

Comanche did not won, but I would say they had a bit of bad luck: What a boat!!!
The next movie, the start taken from a fast boat, a Lyons 60, a 10 years old racer that was refitted to this race: and the last but not least, Wild Rose, the winner on compensated time, a 29 years old Farr 43, doing an acrobatic figure: Yes, wild guys on wild rose: lots of wind, full main and a big spi??? Too wild LOL.

Wood Boat Plans And Kits | COMET CAT 37 IS ON THE WATER

Wood Boat Plans And Kits

I dont find small cats very pleasing to the eye, they tend to be quite high for the length and that gives them a boxy look but I recon the comet 37 is near of what you can do best regarding looks on that size. From some angles it is even beautiful. Looked laterally not so much, but then any small cat isnt.
http://interestingsailboats.blogspot.pt/2014/04/comet-37-cat.html
I have talked already about it when it was still a project, now is on the water and raising a lot of attention: It was nominated for the boat of the year awards and it is not a weak contender. It has proved to be fast, without being properly a true performance cat, at least on this version without daggerboards, it has a very good cruising interior, kind of the best part of two worlds for many and has a nice price: 225 000 euros without VAT.
12K speed with 20K wind is not bad for a 37ft cat ;-) I cannot wait for a true sail test to see how the boat will do upwind. This one has two keels of considerable depth (1.33m) but there will be a more sportive version with daggerboards. Well, sail tests will be many since the boat is going to be tested by sailors from the major European magazines for the European boat of the year, we have only to wait a little :-)

Boat Plans Building | 25 YEARS LATER ANOTHER DRAGONFLY 25

Boat Plans Building

The 25 was the first Dragonfly so a new 25 means something, this was supposed to be a very special boat and it is in fact a more modern design but I think they could have gone further. The floaters are beautiful with a lot of buoyancy (160%) but the central hull could be nicer (in what regards that the new Corsair daysailer seems nicer to me).
A very nice boat with an interior suitable for short range coastal cruising and certainly a good racer, a very fast sailing boat for sure. They have already sold 5 boats that should cost about 69 000 euros (without VAT) with a 5hp outboard and sails.
They say about the boat:

"Both versions will have the same offcenter Kickup centerboard in the mainhull, to create more space inside the boat and the centerboard casing is hidden inside and under the port sofa seat in the center cabin. Both rudder systems will also be able to kickup.

The standardboat will have a 10.50 m Aluminium rotating mast and the Sport version will have a 11.80 m rotating Carbon mast.
The floatdesign is in a total new design and construction, still asymmetric shapes to get better hydrodynamic lift and also to get more buoyancy in the right place. The floats are in new and better hydrodynamic design, so the floats will be more fun to push harder and will have better waterflow.
The floats will have 160% volume, and will be the highest volume floats we have yet ever made in our designs. This means the boat can actually easy fly the centerhull, not that this is the purpose, as the boat will be fastest when the centerhull is just airborne, but it will give more safety as also the floats are actually 30 cm longer forward of the centerhull to give more diagonal safety and stability."

Boat Plans Wooden | WILD OATS LEADS THE SYDNEY HOBART

Boat Plans Wooden

That was before, now Wild Oats leads with a comfortable 40nm lead, the biggest difference between the two boats and confirms my suspects that on Comanche they should have kept a low profile in what regards all those statements about their boat being the fastest sailing monohull on the planet. I dont think Comanche will be able to catch Wild Oats that sails for another of the many consecutive victories on this race. What happened? Easy, light wind and bad seas, the worst conditions for Comanche type of boat, put him sailing at about half the speed of Wild Oats. The weak wind was enough to allow the  low drag hull of Wild Oats to slice through the confused seas while not enough to allow enough power for Comanche to force the passage trough it.
http://www.rolexsydneyhobart.com/tracker/
A great race as usual, cheers to the Australians and New Zealanders whose sailing passion has only a parallel with the French. I wish more countries will follow them on the love of sailing  that is also ours.
Some great movies about the Sydney Hobart race:

Boat Plans Aluminum | THE POGO CAT TS 42

Boat Plans Aluminum

No, it is not made by Structures the shipyard that makes Pogo but I am not the only one to see the similarity in what regards the concept: A shipyard specialized on racing boats (Marsaudon composites), a cruising boat designed almost as a racing boat with a spartan interior that allows a relatively low price for this type of boat and performance.

I like it a lot, a design by Cristophe Barreau, a specialist in cats, the designer of the Outremer 49 and 45 also of many Catana, has a different approach on this design that is more radical than the Outremer 45, starting with beam that is fundamental for the power of a cat: 7.39m for this one against 7.1m on the Outremer 45 that is a bigger boat with 13.77m against 13.06m (LOA).

The Outremer 45 weights 8.7T and the TS42 5.8T, a huge difference that is reflected on the needed sail area: 110m2 wit jib, 159m2 with the gennaker for the Outremer,  89.4m2 with a self tacking jib, 126m2 with the gennaker for the TS 42.

The boat is not a carbon one but a top Eglass, using infusion, cored hulls and decks (PVC as core), aluminium boom and mast. The interior is very simple but functional and comfortable in a zen kind of way.

For reducing costs and to make it simpler the TS 42 has fixed keels but I would be very curious  to see a comparative test sail of the two boats, on the water, and I am not sure that the Outremer would be faster, but I am absolutely sure that the TS 42 is much more affordable: It costs about 336 000 euros without VAT, the Outremer 45 also without VAT costs 470 000 euros.
Of course these prices refer to basic boats, a well equipped boat will cost substantially more and thats the problems with Cats. Even the less expensive TS42, with the European Tax and some extras will cost 450/500 000 euros, much more than a Pogo 12.50 that costs less than 300 000 euros, with Tax and full equipped.

But the TS42 will cost a lot less than a Pogo 50 that costs more than 600 000 euros and I am not sure that if I had the 600 000 euros to give for a performance cruiser I would choose the Pogo 50 over the TS 42, probably not.

The Pogo 12.50 will make about the same thing as the TS42 boat, with the same or more seaworthiness and it will cost much less even sailing a bit slower and regarding that it will depend on whether the boat is racing or cruising. The TS42 will be certainly a blast but it will need a lot of attention to go really fast, not a thing that I would like to do on autopilot or solo, at least with strong winds.
There are a lot more sailors with 300 000 euros to give for a performance cruiser than the ones that can give the extra 150 000 to have the TS42 and thats a shame because the TS42 looks awesome and should sail like a dream. I am sure that the Pogo 12.50 will remain a very popular boat while the TS42 will be a much more exclusive sailboat, but I sure would love to have one ;-)

Boat Plans Bartender | INCREDIBLE DEALS AT DUSSELDORF BOAT SHOW

Boat Plans Bartender

This is a post about boat prices and great deals on the Dusseldorf boat show but only valid for 3 days or so (during the boat show). I thought that even so this probably would interest some. As usually I went to the Dusseldorf boat show, to Dusseldorf  too, for the beer and the people that I find great. They like to socialize through the night, drinking beer, of course,...on the outside, sometimes with temperatures below zero. I guess its a way of maintaining the beer cold LOL. Now for that you need to be German or at least Nordic, not for me even if I like the spirit.  Anyway inside the good old breweries it is crowded and it is very difficult to find a place to seat anyway, even in the middle of the week.

Jeanneau 379
Now, regarding boats, this year a friend asked me to help him to buy a boat and as I have said the best thing when one is going to buy a sailboat (unless the money is no problem) is to have an open choice and look for good deals.

My friend wanted a boat between 37 and 40ft but the budget was not really up to it. He wanted also a fast boat. So we started with the Oceanis 38 that was discarded because he did not like it and I have to say I was not impressed with the finish too. I heard so much good about the interior on American forums that maybe they are better finished on US, I dont know.
Dehler 38

The Jeanneau 379 looked better to us and we went for a full offer. My friend is French and we found a nice guy, a French dealer for most of Southern France (the best ones are almost always the bigger dealers). He went below standard price offering not only the boat show discount but also a dealer discount. The boat with all the options and VAT cost a bit less than 200 000 euros. Thats about what I expected. Not a great deal, just a fair one.

Varianta 37
Then we went to Dehler and the very practical young  German dealer said to us that no way we would have a minimal equipped sailboat for less than 220 000 euros (with VAT) and I know that if he said that then a decently equipped boat would went for more, so we looked instead to the Varianta 37, with pretty much all options. A good fast sailboat with an Ikea interior that would go for about 135000 euros including VAT. My friend did not like the Ikea interior. I still think it is a great boat for the price and the interior can be bettered with time.
Elan 400
We had a look at the Elan 400 but they said the minimum price for a minimum equipped boat should be about 240 000 euros, so we gave up. Went to Dufour that has a new 382 with a fantastic interior but with undersized winches and a kind simplified rigging and the price was just a bit over the one of the Jeanneau 379 but then it happened the first interesting thing:
Dufour 382
This dealer was the only one that was a sailor, understood what we wanted (by the comments about the Dufour 382 to be all about interior and less about sailing) and said that unfortunately thats what people want and that real sailing boats, like the performance Dufour series (like the First from Beneteau) were selling badly, that they were not even bringing the boats to the boat show and were lowering the prices, saying that probably they would stop doing them.
Dufour 40e
So I asked, lowering to what point? and asked him about the best possible bargain for a Dufour 40e performance. He talked to his boss in Paris, we talked about options and I was really surprised with the price he could make on that boat. As he understood that even so it was out of budget, he talked again on the phone and the final price was (if I remember correctly) something like 214 000 Euros (or 204 000?), including everything and delivered on the med. That was a very good price, specially if compared with the one from the Jeanneau 379. The Dufour 40e is a much better boat and with a lot more sailing equipment, much bigger too. He took out of the boat price more than 35 000 euros. If you are interested go for it. The same kind of discount (a huge one) can be made on the Dufour 45e, an awesome boat.

Ok, the price was great but a bit out of the budget so we went to Salona. They will have a new 38 not on this summer but on the next one and I was hopping that they could make a great price on the current 38. My friend sails on the Med, not in France so I asked to the guy from the factory for a direct deal, picking the boat at Marina Kastella, near the factory in Croatia and the results were quite surprising: 25% discount on the boat 50% discount on extras.

Probably you will only get this if you buy directly the boat from the factory and not through a dealer so dont even mention that to the dealer in your area. The result: A well equipped Salona 38 by almost the same price of the Varianta 37!!!! (135 000 euros without VAT).

The boat can be bought with a French leasing and the final price will be lower than the one of the boat with VAT. Thats the one he bought. I have to say that in what regards size, quality of building, deck hardware, speed and seaworthiness the Salona is way better than the jeanneau 379 (that is a 36ft boat) and being able to buy one for about 30 000euros less than the Jeanneau is absolutely incredible and just gives credit for what I said: When buying keep an open approach and look for the great deals, that most of the time are not the boats they have on the boatshow (Salona had no boats on the boat show).

No, this are boats with the hulls from the last generation and thats why you can have good deals on them. Will they have a difference in performance regarding a new hull? Well, if everything was equal on the boats, yes a slightly one and probably an increased downwind performance but irrelevant in what regards cruising and I was saying if everything was the same. Like its is the Saloan 38 will blow completely away the Jeanneau 379 or the Dufour 382, new hull and all and the Dufour 40e will be even faster than the Salona.

Boat Plans For A Chesapeake Deadrise | SOLARIS 50 BOAT TEST A GREAT SAILING BOAT

Boat Plans For A Chesapeake Deadrise

First of all a word of thanks to the ones that have sent me personal messages asking if I had some problem and when the blog would be continued. It will be continued in October since I am sailing and with no time for it right now, except that I had a problem on the saildrive of my boat and while I am at Corfu waiting for it to be fixed,  I will have some time available. So in between some posts and the first one about a favorite, the Solaris 50.

I had already talked about this boat that impressed me on the last Dusseldorf boat show and I had posted already about it: http://interestingsailboats.blogspot.it/2015/03/solaris-50-i-love-it.html

I will not repeat myself regarding the above post just will post some new pictures and refer what Yachting World and Toby Hodges (that tested the boat) say about it:

"This new 50-footer follows the fiendishly cool Solaris 58, which launched in early 2014 – including the pièce-de-resistance dreadnought bow and subtle aft chines. But, at nearly half the price of her larger sister, the Solaris 50 should prove a popular choice.
As the latest Acebal-designed range of Solaris yachts become increasingly sleeker, one thing hasn’t changed: their build quality remains top-drawer.
Javier Soto Acebal has drawn a hull that promises strong performance with a soft motion. It will have an integrated bowsprit for flying Code 0s and gennakers, and a self-tacking jib as standard for easy short-handed sailing.
Stowage has been well-considered throughout. The large sail locker can be converted to a crew cabin and a longitudinal garage will facilitate the launch and recovery of a tender. There is dedicated liferaft stowage and a wet-hanging locker inside, with drip tray and drainage."
 http://www.yachtingworld.com/yachts-and-gear/solaris-50-new-yacht-62492#2WZLoGYwJfbr1gSC.99
On the video talking about how it sails Toby says "Fantastic", regarding the boat "the sexiest 50 ft around" with a "smartly finished interior" "built and finished very well".
I would say a cruising boat for the ones that really like sailing as much as cruising and  also for the ones for whom beauty is an important matter in a sailingboat.

Just a final word about something you dont see but it is there: First the cockpit table, hidden under the cockpit floor, very easy to deploy and the Spray-hood also completely hidden and also easy to rise or store away. Another thing you dont see is the price that I would say it is surprisingly low at 480 000 euros, much less than what would cost a Halberg Rassy that I would say has a similar quality. Maybe thats one of the reasons why they have already sold several of these beauties.

Boat Plans Pdf | GORGEOUS KER 33!!!

Boat Plans Pdf

This beauty, contrary to other KER, will be a relatively affordable boat: It is not a carbon one but an Eglass cored boat with aluminium spars standard (carbon option) and everything was made to bring the price down without compromising too much performance. The price without taxes will round 145 000 Euros.

It has a moderate beam hull (3.36m), a not very deep torpedo keel (2.00m), it will be relatively heavy (3750kg) and that means probably a very big B/D ratio that will be put at good use upwind by the typically Ker designed transom (without chines). A boat that will be more at ease in crewed racing than on solo or short crewed racing.

It has a powerful engine (30hp), an interior that allows offshore racing (3 double berths and a good galley) or even some spartan but certainly fast cruising.

The boat is manufactured by McConaghy in China and I bet it will be a success. There are already several commands. It is not only beautiful as it will be certainly fast and with a contained price: a great combination ;-)
