Plywood Boat Plans | NEW AZUREE 41

Plywood Boat Plans

The much awaited new Azuree 40, that will be a 41. What I dont like? Very little, the winches could be more close to the wheelsman and I really dont like at all that odd front cabin (maybe they change it). I love many features of this Humphreys design, that is very different from the previous Azuree 40, that was also a good but very different cruising boat.

The previous boat was a bit like a bourgeois Pogo, with more weight, less stability and a very good cruising interior; this one is nothing of that and it is on a completely different register. The previous boat had 4.22m of beam, this one only 3.90. The previous boat looked a lot lighter with 7300kg versus 8360kg on the new one BUT if we consider that the 40 had only 1762kg of ballast versus 3211 on the new one we can see that the hull is not heavier but lighter.

In fact I did not like the reserve stability and AVS of the Azuree 40 (that is a very fast boat) but I will certainly like that particular on this one since besides the huge difference in ballast the new boat has more draft as standard (2.40m versus 2.16). A huge stability and a very stiff boat for sure. In what regards length, if the overall length of this boat is bigger, the water line length is smaller on the 41 and the sail area only 3 m2 bigger on the new boat.

Probably the old 40 is slightly faster (except upwind) but this one will be a better and more seaworthy cruising boat...and fast by all accounts. The price is interesting too for a quality boat: about 190 000 euros vat excluded....but what is a great deal now is the old Azuree 40, a good boat that they are selling really cheap.

The "old" Azuree 40, a Ceccarelli design:

Boat Plans Building | 25 YEARS LATER ANOTHER DRAGONFLY 25

Boat Plans Building

The 25 was the first Dragonfly so a new 25 means something, this was supposed to be a very special boat and it is in fact a more modern design but I think they could have gone further. The floaters are beautiful with a lot of buoyancy (160%) but the central hull could be nicer (in what regards that the new Corsair daysailer seems nicer to me).
A very nice boat with an interior suitable for short range coastal cruising and certainly a good racer, a very fast sailing boat for sure. They have already sold 5 boats that should cost about 69 000 euros (without VAT) with a 5hp outboard and sails.
They say about the boat:

"Both versions will have the same offcenter Kickup centerboard in the mainhull, to create more space inside the boat and the centerboard casing is hidden inside and under the port sofa seat in the center cabin. Both rudder systems will also be able to kickup.

The standardboat will have a 10.50 m Aluminium rotating mast and the Sport version will have a 11.80 m rotating Carbon mast.
The floatdesign is in a total new design and construction, still asymmetric shapes to get better hydrodynamic lift and also to get more buoyancy in the right place. The floats are in new and better hydrodynamic design, so the floats will be more fun to push harder and will have better waterflow.
The floats will have 160% volume, and will be the highest volume floats we have yet ever made in our designs. This means the boat can actually easy fly the centerhull, not that this is the purpose, as the boat will be fastest when the centerhull is just airborne, but it will give more safety as also the floats are actually 30 cm longer forward of the centerhull to give more diagonal safety and stability."

Boat Plans Pdf | GITANA OPEN 60 ON FOILS BEAUTIFULL

Boat Plans Pdf

I am convinced: the foils do work even on very nasty weather and the Open 60s (IMOCA) continue to lead in what regards significant technological monohull advances as they have been doing for some decades. Just beautiful the movie, some of this years best sailing footage.

Boat Plans Butler | ARMEL ON FOILS ON THE NEXT VENDEE GLOBE

Boat Plans Butler

Lots of talk about the possibility of IMOCA using foils. I had posted about that here but now it is not just talk but real. The new Banque Populaire VIII, Armels boat will be sailing on foils. The IMOCA class, now that the VOR  passed to one class boats, is the development center of offshore racing monohull. It has been so on the past and it continues to be on the present.

The idea is not using the foils to fly as one the Americas cup catamarans but to create a lot of lift and take the boat more out of the water diminishing apparently its weight. As you can see on the movie they have been testing actively the system using a mini and Armel talks about 60% advantages versus 20% disadvantages. The design is from Verdier/VPLP and the boat will be on the water 2 or three months from now. They work fast in France. I am really impressed ;-)
Some interesting considerations by Armel and VPLP:

Armel Le Cléac’h:

We went for VPLP/ Verdier because of their skill and they were nearby, as we needed to be in touch all the time. Their boats perform well and have always evolved. Banque Populaire wanted to work with a French yard, French craftsmen so we went for CDK. Once again, we can take advantage of them being close to us. .. The designers showed us the new features for the hull on which they had been working. Work began on the mold a year ago or eight months after the start of the project.

The major innovation is the arrival of foils. The designers suggested these after the experiments in the America’s Cup and in sailing in general, where foils are becoming more and more common. The idea was to use these new technologies to take the weight off the hull at certain speeds and to allow acceleration. We did a lot of work with the research team and the designers, an the whole of the Banque Populaire team. This is a huge challenge, which initially was very theoretical. We decided to carry out experiments with the Team. We chartered Sébastien Picot’s Mini 6,50 N°198 on which we fitted three daggerboards, one traditional one and two with foils to carry out trials from July 2014 under the supervision of Bertrand Pacé, to find out more. It was fascinating. It was complicated to set up and adjust and after a lot of attempts, we had some surprises. We went for one of the two options suggested by the designers. We added the foils to the construction in December.?

I wanted the cockpit to be protected and for the boat to be as dry as possible. These monohulls are usually very wet and you get the full force of the spray and waves. When sailing around the world, it is important to be able to carry out manoeuvres while protected by a sliding cover, with a helm that makes her easy to handle and that is well placed to offer good visibility. Spending a long time at the helm can make all the difference in spite of the efficiency of autopilots, as we saw in the final stretch of the 2012-2013 Vendée Globe.

Vincent Lauriot-Prévost:

When the keel is canted windward, the keel blade generates some lift for the boat and to act against the heel, we have the foils making up for the loss of power. We regain the power by generating vertical thrust. The boat is therefore in "air" mode more than the previous generations. It has to correspond to certain angles and forces that we often find in the Vendée Globe, and the result is a huge gain in speed of several knots. The boat will not be more powerful, but will appear to be lighter with a smaller wetted surface as she is raised up by these appendages...Rather than looking for a good all-round performer, we went for a boat that offers gains 60% of the time and slight losses 20% of the time.

Yacht Boat Plans | THE 2015 MINI TRANSAT HAS STARTED

Yacht Boat Plans

Thats a great race (84 racers) and I will be following it here. The weather this year will be very particular and strategy regarding routing (no outside help) will count for much. In 2 days they will get some nasty weather and after that several routing options are possible. Here is the tracker:
http://www.minitransat-ilesdeguadeloupe.fr/cartographie?lang=en

Remember that there are two classes, the proto and the boats that are produced (Serie). on the proto
Frederic Denis is already well ahead of the pack on this boat (proto):
Quite a surprise since he is not a top gun and the boat (designed by Marc Lombard) is not new, having made the 2012 race with Antoine Rioux and in 2013 with Gahinet. The boat had problems and Gahinet was recovered by fishermen. Later the boat was extensively recovered for the new owner and this race.

On the serie Benoit Hantzperg is leading but with lots of boats very near. This guy on a brand new Pogo 3:
Not also among the favorites...but it is a long race (4000nm) and it is just beginning.
Here the main site and this year in English too: http://www.minitransat-ilesdeguadeloupe.fr/?lang=en

Boat Plans Bateau | TRANSQUADRA 2nd LEG MADEIRA MARTINIQUE

Boat Plans Bateau

Qq images du départ en attendant le montage... by overlapprod

As most certainly will know this is a Transat solo or duo race for amateur sailors (at least 40 years old) with sailboats below a given limit of IRC rating. Mostly small fast boats (31/36ft) with some bigger comparatively slower boats on the mix...lots of boats, over a hundred.
The second leg started 3 days ago and they have been sailing fast with 20/25K steady winds and that has been taking a toll on the boats: Two boats lost the mast, one ripped the main sail and another with one of the rudders broken.
You can follow the race on the tracker here:
http://www.transquadra.com/positions.php
And on the news, that unfortunately are only in French:

Some great movies from the first leg of the race (St Nazaire/Madeira or Barcelona/Madeira):

Pontoon Boat Plans Aluminum | RM 1270

Pontoon Boat Plans Aluminum

The RM 1270 is on the water. It is not a new boat but also a bit more than a MKII. The hull is the same, except on the forward sections where a slightly inversed bow substitutes the older one, adding some LWL, a swing ballasted keel is proposed know, joining the two other options, tween keel and torpedo keel and a new interior (only in what regards looks) substitutes the old one.

Basically it is the same boat but more beautiful and slightly improved. Very little, would say some, but the fact is that the RM1260 was already a very up to date cruiser and a very good fast voyage boat and this one is slightly better. All the good stuff is maintained and the boat on configuration with the swing keel has become 100kg lighter. A very interesting yacht for the ones that want a fast boat more adapted to long range cruising.

The test of the previous version, the 1260, by Yachting world. You should take into consideration that is not a boat the Brits are used to and the test reflects that, as if the boat and the concept was something new, instead of this type of boat being successfully used by the French for more than a two decade, having RM built around 300 yachts.

Boat Plans Aluminium | foils

Boat Plans Aluminium

finally something tangible! part 1 of the conversion is the new main foil. i figured it would be simpler to start with that and then build the boat around it. i can also get the centreboard case and the deck going when i get off my ass. ive pretty much bought all the materials.
heres the process:

The foil is longer than the last one, and the strut tapers. the hydrofoil is a higher lift section with a larger flap, as i found by doing this that the lift/drag ratio was generally better in that configuration because of the reduced area needed for takeoff. Top speed may suffer, well see. Also maxed out the span as much as i thought i could structurally with standard modulus carbon and wet layup (span is 1050mm). The flap is designed so that the deflection at the tips is limited to 5 or so degrees, and hopefully that should decrease induced drag when the flap is fully deflected up or down without affecting lift too much. I found that even though the tips twist down slightly, it is difficult to keep the lift distribution fairly elliptical when the flap is allowed to operate through its full range at the tip.

anyway, will lay up some bits when i get time. might have to wait till the new year.

Canoe Boat Plans | a sigh of relief for the foils are done

Canoe Boat Plans

pretty much anyway.
a few cuts here and a few holes there, a bit of sanding.

the rudder is strengthened almost to the centreboard spec, it will hopefully be strong enough. (in its defence it is 2/3 the area... your honour.) i made it shorter beneath the boat so its foil travels 60mm above the line of the centreboard foil, and out of its downwash. there will be a reduction of the torque on the gantry from steering and foiling high, and also it will help the foil ventilate in a crash and thus not snap. we hope. and since there is not so much rudder in the water when foiling high, it will reduce my tendency to jam the tiller towards me to bear off before crashing, as that little bad habbit was breaking things... well reduce it by making it pretty much ineffective. hopefully my new reduced friction centreboard flap will help in that respect too.

Now for the gantry. The QLD moth states and my deadline are fast approaching (were inside a week) The gantry should take 3 or 4 days to put together so i may even be able to rig the boat before the regatta. ha! as if. I bought a vacuum pump off ebay today for $160 bucks, which i think was an ok buy, and its in brisbane too so ill pick it up tomorrow, get some tacky tape on monday and be sucking on monday night. in the mean time i need a jig to get the angles of the tubes right and get them glued/carboned together.

other than that i need to fix the hole in the boat (i bought a clear bulkhead cap for it, stuck it on, but it was a tight fit so when i tested it after the sikaflex had dried, i realised it was squashed and the cap wouldnt screw in.) (try again timmy. Timmah!) I need to get my welding bloke to weld my little stainless gudgeon for the gantry lower attachment, i need to get a batten for my sail, and i need to make those fiddly little ball joints that attach the rods to the flaps.

and that is all.
